I’m transport addicted! I love everything about trains, steam locomotives, planes, trams, buses, trolleys, retro cars!
For today I visited almost all the museums about transport in Moscow and St.-Petersburg and I won’t stop! Some of them will be revisited and there’re more in other cities.
So I decided to create a map with all the museums related to that! I added only ones I’ve been to or plan to visit soon transport museums map, but I plan to search for more and collect all around the world. So if you know a place with a good collection related to any wheels, please tell me about it! Waiting for your recommends in comments and elsewhere.
Why do we have so many different railroad museums in two Russian capitals? Our railroad system is 185 years old, railroads in different regions are serviced by several companies (they all are parts of Russian Railroads or RZD). And finally, they have all their specialties.
Today I’ll tell you about the Central Museum of Railroad Transport in St.-Petersburg. That’s the first railroad museum in Russia and of the oldest technical museums at all.
Fun fact: this museum was founded before the first railroad in the country was built! First 10 years it was a special hall of models in communication routes academy, but later moved in its own house.
Now it has a brilliant collection of documents, models, pictures about railroad history, trains, wagons, locomotives, bridges etc. The museum itself is very quiet usually, a nice place to spend several hours.
