'Millennial must-haves' cost around the world, the local guides collection... add your city!

Hi there everyone. Here is a fun idea!

Last week at Local Guides Connect a few of us discussed this article written by the UBS which compares the cost of ‘being a millennial’ in various cities around the world. It is a unique approach to assessing the cost of living where Buenos Aires, Johannesburg and Moscow were reportedly more expensive than Hong Kong, New York and Paris.

The researchers compared the costs of items like netflix, jeans, sneakers and an iPhone. I was thinking that the local guides community could do a ‘real world’ comparator for other cities to come up with our own list that might be more representative of the world’s smaller cities.

Feel free to reply below pasting the previous entries so we don’t loose data, I think it is fair to consider ‘cities’ rather than all towns/smaller urban areas and have added a rough population tab for the ‘greater metropolitan region’ figure. Open to suggestions! I will get the ball rolling. All costs in USD (use google for rates: eg search ‘18 AUD to USD’). Costs exclude credit card/administration fees and shipping/postage if ordered online… but include taxes. Please read information for the products proposed to be compared and add an additional row in your reply if you need more room in the table! Also open to other collaborative edits using google sheets if we gain momentum.

  • Netflix: monthly cost for basic/cheapest plan
  • iPhone: xs model 5.8 inch display, 64gb (entry level)
  • Avocado: 3 hass avocado or 1kg (or other predominant type) purchased from a market/supermarket
  • Notebook: MacBook Pro 13 inch 2.3GHz dual core 128gb storage (entry level)
  • Jeans: Levi Men’s 501 original fit jeans medium stonewash/traditional denim (open to adding women’s style too in a column but I am not very familiar with what a ‘standard’ jean might be in this instance)
  • Sneakers: unisex Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Low Top white
  • Big Mac: standard menu item no substitutions or additions burger only
  • Coffee: one cup of cappuccino (if n/a then most common variety locally) dine-in at a cafe medium/standard sizing no additions or substitutions with standard milk selection
  • Data: 2gb data-only month-to-month cost or single prepaid data recharge/package. If data bundled with calls/texts for less than individually purchased then use the cheaper figure
