Milky Way photography with a phone? What?! ⭐

I was very lucky to witness the Milky Way Galaxy multiple times over the last few years, but NEVER did I think that it would be possible for me to photograph it with a SMARTPHONE!

And that smartphone ladies and gentlemen, is the Google Pixel 3XL which I received from Google at Local Guides Connect 2019! I used the astrophotography mode for the first time at Issyk-Kul lake in Kyrgyzstan during my travel last week.

The scenery was absolutely madness, it was the brightest Milky Way I have ever seen.

Below another bonus picture of the astrophotography mode, taken at my hotel near Toktogul Reservoir.

Did you use this mode before? Please share your photo in a comment!

Great photos @Stphn . For the benefit of others including myself, how do your set your phone for astrophotography?

Wow, @Stphn

Amazing.

I should practice more with the “night mode” of the Pixel3 camera, because it takes photos that are absolutely impossible to take with other devices.

In the deep of the night they can show you details that are invisible for my eyes.

Unfortunately, living close to a city, I have too much light around, but I will have to try again when I will be able to go to the Alps

Cheers @AdamGT !

Ah yes, actually it was quite hidden and that is why I did not use it before.

You have to use the Night Sight mode on Pixel. Second step is to put your phone on something stable such as a tripod or chair. (in your hand it does not work)

==> A few moments after putting it stable, the astrophotography sign becomes visible and you can shoot in this mode. It takes a minute to complete the shot but it is worth it as you can see!

Thanks a lot @Sophia_Cambodia !

@KamilaKrasnova Thanks a lot, and I can only agree with that!)

Thanks a lot @ErmesT ! And indeed, definitely make use of the Night Mode more. I explained in a few posts above this one how to use the Astrophotography mode though.

The Milky Way was ofcourse not as clearly visible as the picture is showing it, but because of the slow shutter speed of the Astro mode, it becomes visible well. :hugs:

That´s amazing @Stphn :open_mouth:  Beautiful pictures

I’ve used astrophotography mode ( Gcam APK in a Mix 3) just a couple of times, bad results I’ve to say, too much light pollution where I live

Maybe during summer I’ll visit a place with no light pollution and can be able to shot a photo like yours!

I really hope that you will be able to get the chance to do that. Make sure to tag me once you post it here. :hugs:

@Stphn man that is super cool.

Having come from the country back in Canada, I miss the Milky Way and the night sky. Being able to capture the Milky Way on a phone camera is doubly impressive.

I know right @O_Nate !

I can only imagine that if you grew up with the Milky Way above your head all the time, it sucks even more that it is not visible anymore.

Where are you living now then?

Those are some incredible photos @Stphn ! I never thought to try this with my phone. My husband and I did attempt to photograph the Milky Way with our camera though. I wrote a whole post about it here, in case you wanted to read :slightly_smiling_face:

@Stphn now, I live in Cork Ireland. There are spots, supposedly, where you can see the milky way.

However, we are blessed to see Cork Harbour and the activity of the harbour. You make the most of each situation.
