Location and origin of the site
It is located in an extensive valley in the area of Ixtlán del Río, near two majestic volcanoes, Ceboruco and Tequila, in the state of Nayarit, where obsidian stones abounded, which were highly valued for the production of tools and sharp weapons. This site dates back to the beginning of the Christian era. It developed within a vast region of the Mexican Pacific coastal plain dominated by the Aztecs.
Particularity of the site
According to experts, the main peculiarity of Los Toriles is that it has one of the few circular temples in the Mesoamerican area, known as the Temple of Ehécatl, the god of the wind.
There are vestiges of several buildings where priests and rulers apparently resided. There are also wide terraces, and several rectangular bases, where possibly some religious rituals were performed.
Current conditions of Los Toriles
It is the only pre-Hispanic site that is part of the Public Registry of Monuments and Archaeological Zones of the State of Nayarit. It offers guided tours with experts who provide insight into the discovery and conservation of this cultural treasure of Mexico.
