Mexico festooned with Flor de Nochebuena / Red Poinsettia Flower

Flor de nochebuena is native of Mexico, and is the traditional Christmas Flower, when I see it I associate it with Christmas season, they bloom in this season of the year as a beautiful red plant we know as Flores de Noche Buena in Mexico, which means “Christmas Eve”. Later in USA Joel Roberts Poinsset introduced the plant to his country and they renamed it as Poinsettia in his honor.

Since they are very popular every year one of the most important avenue in Mexico City (Reforma Avenue) is festooned with poinsettias that are set up all along the avenue. Can you believe this year they set up around of 192 000 plants? Yes… A lot and they look really beautiful.

In December 8th is celebrated the National Day of Flor de Nochebuena also in the USA in December 12th is the national Day but You might be wondering Why is it very important for us and why do we have a national day?

This plant is really important in Mexico because it has become the Christmas flower in many places around the world and it is also very popular in this season. It is a privilege to see a little bit of Mexico around the world.

Some interesting facts about Flor de Nochebuna/Poinsettia:

  • Because of their popularity as holiday decorations, poinsettias are second highest selling potted plant in the USA during Thanksgiving and Christmas day, according with The providence Journal.

  • There are more than 100 different varieties.

  • They were used in rituals and ceremony from ancestral people.

  • This plant also have medicinal properties.

  • It was first used at Christmas around the 17th century.

  • The shape of the flower and leaves are sometimes thought as symbol of star of Bethlehem.

I know it’s a little late to be talking about Christmas LOL, I just wanted to show you these photos and I didn’t want you to miss this fact about Mexico, I hope you like it, let me know what you think… Aren’t they beautiful? Have you ever seen them?

Buenas fotos @Ale_003 !

:joy:
