Melbourne is exhilarating

Melbourne is a gateway to a great diversity of sights and experiences. I was inspired after a particular photo walk with a local guide to write a poem in ode of the city that has been my home for the last 28 years to try to capture a bit of what Melbourne is.

Here’s sharing my poem:

MELBOURNE IS EXHILARATING

(by Maria Ngo)

From the city to the sea

Or the hills and the country

Melbourne is as diverse as it can get

Cosmopolitan

Multicultural

And very colourful

Street art

Food art

State of the art

Grand and stately

Funky or quirky

Intentional design to withstand time

Friendly pooches

Laid back smooches

At work or at play

Come visit any day

Coffee in the alleys

Food in the galleys

Musical performances

Heart fluttering romances

Whether shopping or fishing

Cruising and singing

Melbourne is exhilarating!

Hope you enjoyed that quick romp through my city!

Cheers!

@Ant_Bad_Yogi I’m glad you liked the poem. It didn’t take that long. Probably an hour or two at the most. But usually I get most of it done then let it sit and then come back to fiddle with it to change a word or two or a phrase over a few days. But this one was quite quick.

A great poem @MariaNgo , great pictures, a great way to show up Melbourne. How about you recite this poem to us in SJ? I’d love to listen. Congrats #TeamAustralia.

@MariaNgo your photo collages are amazing and capture so many elements of Melbourne. Such an awesome city. If you had to choose, where would your favourite place be?

@JustineE Now that is a really difficult question. I think it will depend on the mood that I am in. If I am feeling like I need a bit of space I would say sunset on Brighton beach. I find that connecting with nature rejuvenates me. But if I felt like I wanted a bit of hustle and bustle I would then say The city and then also the art gallery. The art gallery is free to visit except for the special exhibitions. The general entrance exhibition area is still quite impressive. And that it is free and that they conduct free tours as well is even more impressive.

Great answers @MariaNgo . Melbourne has so much to offer. Something for everyone and, at times, all four seasons in one day! I loved taking my kids to the Melbourne Zoo when they were young. They were absolutely mesmerised by the meerkats. They would stand there, pressed up against the glass, watching the meerkats and giggling with such contagious laughter that I couldn’t help but giggle too.

Hi @MariaNgo ,

I absolutely love these photos of Melbourne! I’d love to visit one day. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Australia and I can’t wait to visit. What’s your most favorite place in Melbourne?

@MariaNgo I loved your post about Melbourne and your poem also! It a so cool way to show your city!

In the second group of photos in the seven picture, you showed a dish very similar to one in Argentina! We call it “Churros” and we made them with flour, water, salt, and sugar and after giving the shape boiled in oil. We eat them alone or filled with Dulce de Leche. Are those are similar?

Thanks for sharing that part of your beatiful country! Your posts #TeamAustralia are so cool!

@kroza Thank you! I’m glad you found it fun.

@Cecilita Yes, you are right about the churros! The shop is called San Churro. There are many branches in Melbourne.

The one where I took that particular photo was at: https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/San+Churro/@-37.8015423,144.9642385,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x6ad642d3d70db2d7:0x6b9cbb049d28f390!8m2!3d-37.8015466!4d144.9664272

I have posted photos to that location and you can see if it is similar to what you have in Argentina.

Here it is very popular to eat it in some form of chocolate or caramel.

I just looked up that new word “Dulce de Leche” which led to looking up “https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maillard_reaction” (!). And then I took to how to pronounced that new word which led to a youtube video on how to make it.

LOL

I love how I keep learning about all sorts of new things.

Thanks for reading my post.

@DanniS Hi! I’m so happy that you liked my photos. Melbourne is very very easy to take photos of because there are just so many wonderful things to photograph. It was very difficult to choose what to include. The city is so vibrant and ‘happening’. And there is so much movement and colour. And the weather is always changing so I never get tired of it.

My absolute favourite place? I love the peace of the Melbourne Botanic Garden and being among beautifully tended plants and open spaces and so much greenery in so many hues and variety of textures. And when you come in the right season, so much colour as well.

Another spot I really like is the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria). The general collection is free to view and there are also free tours that one can join. Special exhibits are $$.

I also love Brighton Beach. Especially the summer sunsets. They can be quite amazing. I love walking along the tracks or the beach from St Kilda down for many km along this stretch of beautiful coastline where erosion has created some very interesting features along parts of the cliff. Even the texture of the sand changes from one spot to another.

I love Southbank promenade and seeing the city from that perspective. I also just recently discovered an open space above Hammer Hall where you can get a good view of the city. (Free)

But if you want a view from a height, then it’s the Railto you need to head to or the Eureka Sky deck. (Both these cost $$)

I hope you’ll get a chance to visit Melbourne one day. There is a lot to see in Melbourne and its environs. You will need at least a week here. Especially if you like nature. There’s quite a lot to soak in.

@JustineE Funny you should mention the meerkats. My kids also found the meerkats amusing! We would spend quite a bit of time in that exhibit when they were younger. The giant tortoise is also fascinating. Did you know that they like to eat hibiscus?

Cool fact @MariaNgo . I didn’t know that!
