Jaime Lyn is an actress, writer, and comedian based in Los Angeles, California. She’s an avid YouTuber and a founding member of the YouTube musical theater company Team Starkid. (You might recognize her as Ginny Weasley from the viral sensation A Very Potter Musical!)
When she’s not working, Jaime Lyn loves to explore new places. She’s been to 22 countries and counting and has lived in four major cities. “I love exploring new cities, trying new food, and visiting unique attractions around the globe,” she told us. “I’ve eaten grubs in Africa, been spelunking through caves in China, and gone scuba diving with sea creatures in Thailand.”
We recently caught up with Jaime Lyn to learn more about her acting experience, her favorite taco joint, and why she’s proud to be the host of The Review Review.
You’ve got thousands of subscribers on your personal YouTube channel. What kinds of videos do you love to share there?
Creating funny videos on Instagram and YouTube is one of my favorite hobbies. As a comedian, I love writing and performing original characters and doing impressions of famous people. Unique people fascinate me…so do ordinary people. There’s something so exciting about diving into a character and seeing the world from a new perspective. In that way, my comedy work feels a lot like traveling!
One very cool thing about you is that you played Ginny in A Very Potter Musical. Could you explain what that is and how you became involved in it?
You caught me! Indeed, I am a founding member of the YouTube musical theater company Team Starkid. The group of us met when we were college students studying theater at the University of Michigan. To date, Team Starkid has created 11 original full length musicals and performed at concert venues and theaters all over the world. Our most notable show is A Very Potter Musical, a musical parody of the entire Harry Potter book series, which we debuted on YouTube nearly 10 years ago!
I heard you were also featured in a Super Bowl commercial! What was that like?
Ah, yes…my 15 minutes of Super Bowl commercial fame came and went. Earlier this year, I got to live out my wildest dream as a mermaid in a Super Bowl commercial. The mermaid tail I wore was made of custom fit silicone and weighed 30 pounds! All day, I had to be wheeled around on a cart and couldn’t use the restroom for over 8 hours! All the while, I got to sport a VERY fancy wig that costs more than my entire college tuition. Ah, the life of a mermaid…
You’re now the host of our new YouTube series, The Review Review. What has your experience been like so far?
TOO MUCH FUN! Having the opportunity to read reviews from all over the world has reminded me just how similar we all are. Local Guides reviews are a great way to see the world through the people who are experiencing it firsthand. As such, I am honored to be hosting The Review Review and I will work hard to ensure that I’m giving Local Guides the recognition that their hard work, knowledge, and creativity deserve.
Why were you interested in joining this project?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been using Google Maps and referencing Local Guide reviews for everything from finding the best brunch spot to finding the best place to go scuba diving. I‘m so fortunate to be at the forefront of an international community that is passionate about sharing the world! If I can encourage someone to write a review or even just read a review, then I feel like I’ve had a small role in helping connect people around the world and that is pretty darn cool.
Which episode was the most fun for you to film so far and why?
I am a hardcore bagel enthusiast so I especially loved filming the bagel episode. As a native New Yorker, I am VERY particular about my bagels and am constantly on the hunt for the best New York-style bagel outside of New York City, so I could really relate to the bagel pride that was resonating in those bagel reviews. Oh, I also love the episode on aquariums thanks to a fun little outfit I go to wear.
Do you have a favorite review from The Review Review?
“WOOOOOHOOOO! WOOOHOO GOOD!” was one Local Guide’s review of an amusement park and I like to imagine she wrote the review while she was upside down mid loop-the-loop!
What’s a place that always gets a 5-star review from you and why?
There’s a fabulous taco truck in East Hollywood called Leo’s Tacos. The staff is friendly, the line moves fast, and the tacos (especially the al pastor ones) are especially delicious. They’re made fresh with pineapple slices on top! Don’t forget to drizzle on some of their homemade hot sauces and salsas. Deeeelish!
What have you learned about Local Guides through reviewing their reviews?
Reading Local Guide Reviews is like having access to millions of personal tour guides right at my fingertips. My favorite reviews are ones that are infused with detail, personality, and read like the kind of advice you get from a good friend. Local Guides are literally putting the world on Google Maps and it takes a special kind of person to take time out of their busy lives to sit down and share their experiences with the world. For that, my wanderlust and I are grateful!
