Meet Accessibility Champion, Valentine

Local Guide Valentine (@uavalentine) is a Level 8 Local Guide from Kyiv, Ukraine, currently living in Tel Aviv, Israel. She frequently travels for both business and pleasure, and captures beautiful photos of her adventures. She often shares detailed reviews on Google Maps and includes helpful information for people who rely on accessibility information to get around. She frequently includes details about wheelchair access—whether a place has it or not.

We recently caught up with Valentine to learn more about her commitment to helping others with accessibility needs.

Why are you passionate about accessibility information being shown on Google Maps?

I am interested in accessibility because I think this information can help not only people with special needs, but also elderly people who cannot walk well or take the stairs. Taking into account that the population of the planet is becoming older, we might need this type of accessibility for more and more people around us—and ourselves too one day.

I think it should become a basic duty to help others to get to the same point where everybody is heading too.

What have you done to help add accessibility information or generate visibility for accessibility information to/for Google Maps?

I only started this project, but ever since I did I try to take pictures and add comments regarding the accessibility options wherever I go. I plan to start capturing 360 photography with wheelchair access details, too. I think it might help others find their way.

What area (mobility, vision, hearing, etc.) are you most interested in improving?

I’ve been interested in mobility, but I will keep in mind vision and hearing too from now on. In Israel, hearing options are very well presented. For example, when the bus comes to the bus station, it announces the number of the bus and it’s destination. The walking areas have the voice system too.

What do you wish other Local Guides knew about accessibility?

I wish everyone knew that they can make a huge difference for someone looking for accessible places and paths around us.

What one feature would you like to see on Google Maps?

I would like to see the accessible walk path once you search for the itinerary on Google Maps.

What’s your tip for finding your passion through the Local Guides program?

Whatever you love to do most in life can become your passion through the Local Guides program. If you like to meet new people, join the meet-ups. If you are a foodie, share your knowledge regarding the restaurants and cafes in reviews and create lists. If you love to travel, your traveling tips would be highly appreciated by other travelers. If you love to take pictures, Google Maps users are waiting for the great shots to be admired! And if you care about others, accessibility questions will be the right point for you!

How are you making an impact for people with accessibility needs? Tell us in the comments below!

Congratulation, @uavalentine , so happy to see you on this post.

Well, it was expected, looking at the high level of your contributions in the community, but still beautiful to read this post, and how to forget the photo of your meet-up in Tel Aviv.

Brava (in Italian) is the minimum that I can say.

Thank you @AriMar for sharing about a great accessibility champion, and a great person too

Oooooh, thank you, thank you, thank You soooo much, dear** @AriMar , for putting me in the list of accessibility oriented local guides, once having been inspired and deeply moved by @Jesi **and #OneAccessibility Project! It is a tremendous honor and pleasure for me!!!

Thank youuuu, dear** @ErmesT , @Ant_Bad_Yogi , @Emmik20 , @LuigiZ ****, @GLG_BVF , @Rezgar , @ShafiulB , @SaifIS **and all GL for your kind support and attention!

This month has been a long marathon for me in work, home visit, conferences, vacations, magnificent Meet-up in my home town in Kyiv, Ukraine, first paragliding experience, lunching my small project on 360 photos, 1,000,000 views recently (yuuuhoooo), a badge of Master in Photography and Reviews on Google Maps and…, the most important, this accessibility award now! I am so so so so touched and sooooo happy. Thank Youuuu endlessly!!!

This intensive month guided me to lots of fabulous places in France, such as flourishing lavander fields of the Plateau de Valensole in France, Open Air Cinema in the Provence villages all summer long, Moustier-Saint-Marie town and its impressive Notre-Dame de Bouvoir Church on the very top of the mountain, Citadelle de Sisteron in the gates of the Alps-de-Haute-Provence region, the Wall of Penitent Rocks in Mees village, Notre-Dame du Rock Church with its tremendous view over the city and the Verdon river in Castellane village. Not all of them were accessible, cause some places are located in the hiking areas only, but still the main part of them had accessible beautiful viewpoints!

And… what brought me the biggest joy and delight was that the most beautiful place I have ever seen (for now) - Gorges du Verdon in France was totally accessible from the viewpoints on the road D952, where there are lots of small “observation islands” to admire amazing panorama over the Verdon river and Saint Croix du Verdon lake. Beauuuuuuuuuutiful and accessible site for everybody!!!

So now I am finally back to Israel again and on my way to be back here, on Connect asap too, with recaps, posts, new Google photo Albums and some translations I’ve done for the Erment’s Clean the World project. And I can’t wait to check out on allllll your great great posts here too!

Thank youuuuuuuuuu once again for everything you do on Google Maps to help and inspire people all over the world!!!

With aaaaall my best wishes,

Valentine
