Local Guide Muhammad Fachry (@Fachry_My_ID) in Bandung, Indonesia is passionate about adding accessibility information on Google Maps. From verifying accessibility features to hosting meet-ups. Muhammad hopes to make life easier for people with disabilities.
We recently interviewed him to learn more about these efforts.
Why are you interested in accessibility?
I am interested in accessibility because I feel concerned that accessibility in my city is still minimal. I hope that with the new features on Google Maps, I can help those with disabilities to get the information they need.
What have you done to help add accessibility information or generate visibility for accessibility information to/for Google Maps?
When accessibility features launched on Google Maps, I immediately held a meetup with the community to help add accessibility information on Google Maps. Also, I joined my local disabilities community to educate others on how to take advantage of accessibility features on Google Maps.
What do you wish other Local Guides knew about accessibility?
They can contribute more than they know.
What one feature would you like to see on Google Maps?
Offline maps for all countries.
Are there any posts on Connect or meet-ups youâve hosted that help demonstrate your contributions around accessibility to Local Guides, Google Maps and your community?
Yes! Seventeen Local Guides participated in an accessibility walk in Bandung. You can read about it in my post, â[RECAP] Accessibility Walk Bandung Local Guides.â Our activities were even covered by local media newspaper called Pikiran Rakyat which included information about our meet-up to map accessibility.
What have you learned by mapping for accessibility?
I learned how to seek the existence of accessible toilets, ramp for wheelchairs, wide emergency doors, elevators, and wheelchair access in public places.
Muhammad is hosting another accessibility meet-up in Bandung on March 10. Be sure to join him if youâre in the area!
