Meet Accessibility Champion, Karen

Local Guide Karen Alves Gaspar ( @GasparKaren ) is a Local Business Champion and a big fan of exploring what cities have to offer: from animal cafes to museums and more. Originally from Brazil, Karen now lives in Toronto, Canada. Wherever she goes, she’s looking for the accessibility features that could make everyone feel comfortable visiting a place. Karen adds those details to her reviews on Google Maps to help others make the best choices.

We recently caught up with Karen to learn more about what motivates her to contribute to accessibility. Here’s what she shared.

Why are you interested in accessibility?

Accessibility has always been an important topic for me as I have family and friends who use wheelchairs, walkers, and canes, or are autistic. I believe that everyone has the right to adequate accessibility in parks, restaurants, and other environments.

What have you done to generate visibility for accessibility information on Google Maps?

As I visit restaurants, parks, museums, public transport, and other places, I try to collect as much information as possible to help people with physical and intellectual disabilities. This information involves bathroom accessibility, ramps, Braille menus, hearing aids, and more.

Do you have a favorite Google Maps contribution that you’ve shared?

One of my favorite reviews is of the Gateria Cat Cafe, which is located in São Paulo in Brazil. The atmosphere is incredible, with great accessibility for people with physical disabilities and a team trained to assist people with visual and hearing impairments. They also do an incredible job caring for the cats until they are adopted by people who can give them the same care.

Are there any posts on Connect or meet-ups you’ve hosted that help demonstrate your contributions around accessibility?

Unfortunately, I still haven’t been able to participate in or organize a meet-up, but I always keep myself updated on posts from Local Guides who write about accessibility. I really enjoy reading @EmekaUlor 's posts; they include a wealth of very nice details.

What’s your tip for finding your passion through the Local Guides program?

Google Maps and the Local Guides program have become very important in my daily life. Through them, I have gained friendships from different countries and always receive incredible experiences in the form of stories and posts. Being able to enrich Google Maps with information that helps people is an extremely rewarding activity.

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I am a Nutritionist specializing in Quality Management in Food Production, passionate about books, travel, and exploring everything a city can provide.

Thank you for what you do, Karen! Local Guides, do you include accessibility information in your contributions on Google Maps? Let us know below.

Congratulations @GasparKaren for this feature. I really like how you write your posts highlighting important information and features. You also include a google map link of the location which is quite nice. I used to do this but stopped. I guess I’d need to start showing places on the maps again.

I never knew the beginning of Sao Paulo until I read this interesting post of yours. I also read about the St. Lawrence Market and was excited to learn how accessible it is.

Thank you for showcasing your neighbourhoods on Maps and Connect and thank you for reading my posts too. I am motivated.

Keep guiding better.
