The Medirigiriya Watadageya is situated in the kingdom of Polonaruwa, Sri Lanka. It was built on a small rock in 7th century with an unique architectural design. There was a single entrance facing to the north. At the entrance, there is a massive curved stone frame built at the bottom of a staircase.The entrance was followed by 27 stone steps to a large open resting area.
Four steps lead from the resting area to the actual Stupa house. It had a low stone wall which ran around it. it walls are less than 1 meter tall. Seated against the wall facing the four cardinal directions were four exquisite stone Buddha statues. There was a huge sleeping Buddha in the center of the Stupa House.
The environment around here is very peaceful and a small forest area in the dry zone of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa. This is a best place to learn about the talent of the old Sri Lankan peoples.
