Medhane Alem Cathedral

I came across this magnificent cathedral in the middle of Addis

Ababa. I was just strolling down the street from my hotel when I spotted the spires of this edifice.

I was surprised to see a big cathedral in Ethiopia when compared to what I usually see in other countries. On checking online. I can see that it is the largest in Ethiopia and second largest in Africa. Its name means the " Saviour of the World".

It spreads over a huge swathe of land . It is quite a busy place . There are host of petty traders, selling religious relics. Families having picnic , photographers looking for client and beggars in the name of God.

One single thing that impressed me was how religious people around here could be. I saw both ladies and gentlemen genuflecting and deeply absorbed in prayers. The old are not left out. Beautifully dressed in all white robes . They were leaning against the wall in prayers.

I managed to get inside. The interior is beyond what words could describe. It is just magnificent. Out of respect, I couldn’t take pic inside the cathedral. I would advise anyone ,if you ever found yourself in Addis Ababa, the cathedral is most visit .

Hello @Emmik20 ,

This is a beautiful cathedral indeed, you are very right! I remember the many stories about Addis Abeba my grandfather used to tell us grandsons when we were kids. He used to live and work in Africa when he was young and we loved to hear about such a faraway place. Everything we heard about Africa sounded misterious and dangerous but extremely interesting to us.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful monumental church. If you want you can take a look at these posts on How to take photos of architecture and on How to take photos of monuments and historical sites.

Thanks for the comment @Giu_DiB . Indeed there are wild places in Africa that worth visiting. Getting a perfect shot of the cathedral seem difficult except walking to the fence. Anyway , I have just checked the link and the info is helpful . I surely make good use of it on my next adventure.
