From March to July, Mayflowers produce numerous clusters of delicate blossoms. The tiny flowers range from pink to white in color and 1/3- to 3/4 inches wide in size. They give off a fragrant, spicy scent that intensifies over time.
Mayflower is also known as the Haemanthus/ Monsoon Lily/ blood lily/ Fireball etc. The term “Haemanthus” means blood flower in botanical books. The Blood Lily, or the Haemanthus albiflos of the evergreen variety, characterized by a broad, colorful foliage shaped like a tongue and large, egg-shaped bulbs.
For flashy, spherical, red blossoms indoors or out, the blood lily is a rare and unusual South African container plant. This South African genus and its known species can be found in Arabia, Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia and Botswana. On the other hand, the Scadoxus puniceus species (paintbrush lily) are native mostly to the Cape Town or eastern Cape provinces in South Africa.
But the photo has been taken from Dhaka city, Bangladesh. You will find it in some Nurseries near Curzon Hall of DU.
It’s best to grow them in pots. Plant the bulbs with their necks just at or a little above soil level, taking care not to damage the fleshy roots. In general use a soil-based compost placed over a generous layer of drainage material such as earthenware crocks, pebbles or gravel. Water and feed regularly, especially while plants are bearing flowers and fruit, when a high-potash fertilizer is recommended.Thanks.
