Planning a wedding is never easy. After a year of efforts we had an amazing wedding night. Now it was time to rest and gather energy. We wanted to visit a new country for our honeymoon and decided to spend the week at Mauritius. In this post I am planning to give information and tips about our trip.

My first recommendation is to go here in the summer (November-April). We visited during winter but the weather was still over 20°C.
We took a 10 hour flight from İstanbul to Mauritius but thanks to Turkish Airlines’ Business Class, we felt as comfortable as at home so we reached the island rested.

There are many beautiful hotels in Mauritius. We chose The Oberoi Beach Resort because their private villas had their own swimming pool.

After landing to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport we were asked to fill 2 forms. I recommend you to bring your own pen and fill the forms in the passport control line, otherwise you will have to wait longer than expected. The best place to change money is at the airport. Currently 1 USD = 46.20 MUR. Our hotel has booked a transfer for us and we started a 1 hour through the island. On the way we saw many beauties of Mauritius. The most interesting thing we saw was the sitting human figure on the mountain.

We were warmly welcomed at our hotel. After a short tour our relaxing break had started. Our room looked even better than the pictures. The hotel had many different dining options and we tried all of them. The breakfast in the room was a unique experience. We even had a chance to dine over the water.

The Bar served international lunch options. Our favorite was Banana Chips, Prawn Brioche Roll and Peach & Passion Mojito.

On our first night we dined at a restaurant called The Gunpowder Room where we tried home made Creole food.

The second night we tried the On The Rocks restaurant. Here we tried the flavors from the Indian Ocean. The lobster was our favorite. We also had a chance to try a unique dish Palm Heart Salad which is made by the inner core of the palm tree.

Third night was a fine dine experience. At the Herb Trail we tried the Fire N Smoke set menu. Foods were cooked slowly at the BBQ pit and plates looked like art. The crayfish bisque was the signature dish.

Our hotel also had different activites which they called Touching Senses. These activites included Hindu Ceremony, Star Gazing, Cooking, Tasting, Painting and Sculpture. We joined the rum and wine tasting and learned the method of creating your own flavored rum and how to understand the ingredients of wine.

Another unique experience was the watersports. Our favorite was the glass bottom boat where we had a chance to see different corals and fish.

We were here to rest and enjoy the beach all day but we couldn’t resist to see the popular spots of Mauritius. A one day taxi trip around the island was more than enough. I recommend you to set the fee before your tour ends. Our first stop was Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. The entrace fee for tourists were 300 MUR. Here you can see white and pink lotus flowers, giant lillies, turtles, deers and much more…

Our second stop was the Local Market which is divided as meat and vegetable sections. There were many different types of fruits which we didn’t have in our home town and the passion fruits here tasted amazing. You can also buy souvenirs from this area but again I recommend you to set prices before shopping. After this tiring day we went back to the hotel and went to the spa. The Oberoi Signature massage, made with hot bowls, will make you feel renewed.

Despite all the activites we tried, the sunset dinner by the ocean was by far the best. We enjoyed the night with amazing food, live music and even a wine tasting surprise.

To sum up, I can say that this week has given us energy and we are flying back with great memories. I recommend you to visit this hidden romantic spot for an unforgettable break. I couldn’t find many post on Connect about honeymoons so I wanted to add one. Hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading. Please feel free to drop your own recommendations for Mauritius!
