Today, I am excited to share a glimpse of Math Mandir Seoni, a centuries-old temple located in the heart of Seoni District, Madhya Pradesh, India. This temple is not just a center of devotion but also holds immense historical significance in India.
A Brief History
The Math Mandir Seoni is considered to be from an ancient era. Different beliefs surround its origin — some associate it with the Kalachuri dynasty (1000-1180 AD), while others believe it is linked to the Gond rulers. Many also believe that the great philosopher and spiritual leader Adi Shankaracharya himself worshipped the Shivlinga (Shiva Lingam) located here and that the temple was sanctified by his visit.
Historical evidence about its exact origin is debated, but references from the book Kal Aaj Aur Kal suggest that it dates back to the Kalachuri period. The Kalachuri rulers were known for establishing large monasteries in regions like Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, and Balaghat. Their inscriptions often began with “Om Namah Shivaya,” strengthening the belief that this temple belongs to that era.
After the decline of the Kalachuris, the Gond rulers took over. King Sangram Singh (around 1480 AD) was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva and established many temples and monasteries. Seoni’s Math Mandir is believed to have developed further under the Gond influence.

• In the British era, the temple and its adjoining lands were seized but later purchased for ₹295 in 1857.
• Over time, ownership changed several hands, and disputes arose until it stabilized under local custodianship.
• A living Samadhi (tomb) has been mentioned in records, where a devotee achieved spiritual union while placing a Shivlinga on his head.
• A sacred Dhuni (holy fire) existed in the temple complex, which was mysteriously extinguished but rekindled approximately 30 years ago by Swarn Moolchand Dubey, a former municipal president.
• Attached to the temple is a pond, originally known as Moti Talab, now popularly called Math Talab.
