How do I go about getting a metro station marked with the M logo on a metro station in Doha, Qatar? The Al Waab station doesn’t show the M logo.
@TheEagleEye i The algorithm which works for the labeling the places takes many factor into account. Some of them are listed in the article which is listed below.
how to place labels on google map
You can always report the feedback on maps. I hope this article helps.
Thanks @GaganMishra
Hi @TheEagleEye ,
When searching for “Al Waab Metro Station” two places comes up. Only one of them have the M icon. The big difference is not so much the Icon it self but the fact that it is on the Transit layer of Google Maps. This layer is not editable for Local guides. The big difference is that the local transportation authority feeds live data about departures etc to be displayed. The place named Al Waab Metro Station - Next to Al Borg Medical Lab is on the other side of the road and could easily be just another entrance. It is not on the transit layer, hence you can suggest edits. I don’t know what is best to do here. Maybe all metrostations in Doha only have one official place. You could check other stations. If you find that the metro company forgot to mark this secondary entry it might be relevant to contact them rather than trying to fix it your self on maps. But it could also be that they decided to add only one place for each station and left it up to others to add secondary entrances. Or they might think the secondary entrances should not be on the map at all. So my recommendation is research this further before doing anything.
Thanks @MortenCopenhagen
@TheEagleEye , My pleasure.
Hi @TheEagleEye ,
@MortenCopenhagen is absolutely right when he said that Metro stations belong on the so-called Transit Layer and that this layer is not editable by Local Guides, but instead Google Transit Partners and Google only.
The other listing of the same metro station close to it, the one we are talking about, must have been added by a member of the public and should be removed. This person could not find the category metro station and used a railway company category instead. This is trying to bypass the system and is deemed bad practice and probably hits your trust-score when you do it.
Categories are like keys. When you don’t have the key, then don’t proceed and first find out why you may not be allowed to add a certain type of place.
There are lots of mappable places on Google Maps that we, Local Guides, can not add or edit. Think mountain peaks, rivers, beaches, just to name a few. They can only be added or edited by Google. As @MortenCopenhagen suggested, when something is wrong on the map and not editable by us, we should report it under “feedback” inside the Google Maps app.
You will find many posts here on Local Guides Connect that give you this information. It would be nice if there was an official resource where we could look up all these little bits of Map Editing rules and guidelines, but until then we are expected to do our home-work (desk-research) here on LGC.
Happy mapping and let’s guide and be guided.
@GaganMishra thank you for sharing the link about how place labels work on Google Maps. As you can see @TheEagleEye , this information is outside the official pages of Google Maps or Local Guides. In this case, we learn the facts from an official resource at Google My Business.
I have learned that as Local Guides who are into Map Editing, we should mostly focus on the rules and guidelines that are communicated at Google My Business. After all, we are often adding or editing unclaimed businesses so we are doing the work instead of the owner of the business that we are editing.
Hi @TheEagleEye ,
Please note that I have accepted @JeroenM 's reply as a solution as it gives the complete answer to your question.
