The two rock churches are believed to be built around the 13th century which are carved deep into the rocky mountains of Gerealta in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia.
To get to these ancient rock-Hewn churches it requires around one and half hours of hiking on a fairly stiff mountains but ones you get to the top the view is so magnificent. The ancient partly damaged paintings in the roofs and walls of the churches tall a very long story.
The towns near the churches are very small but right blow the mountains there are two lodges (Gerealta and Korkor Lodges) it’s also possible to have round trip in a day directly from Mekelle city which is about two hours of drive one way.
If you happen to be in the northern part of Ethiopia it’s worth to visit them.
The famous Abune Yemata Church is also in a short distance.
My friends and I have visited the churches in the weekend and manage to capture some photos using our cell phones and I would like to share them with you.
