Marble Canyon in Karelia

In Karelia near the village of Ruskeala there are unique beautiful careers. One of which called the Marble Canyon, is an amazing landmark and natural monument of mining in Russia.
There was mining of marble in the XVII century. The Swedes started this business and later they began to extract marble for the needs of construction in Russia. During World War II, the canyon was flooded with groundwater. Presumably this happened because of the explosions organized by the retreating Finnish troops. Nowadays the Marble Canyon in Ruskeala starts a new life and attracts many tourists.
The marble lake that filled the canyon attracts lots of tourists with the beauty of the sheer marble beaches going down into the emerald water. A ranges of local marble color may vary from snow-white to black, sometimes with an admixture of greenish stripes.
In 2005, the Ruskeala Mountain Park was opened in the Marmara Canyon. There are 2 types of tours for tourists: by water by walk . The walking route is laid around the canyon with view points. On the boat, you can swim along the perimeter of the canyon, look closely adits and drifts, sail through the marble grotto. You can also go down into the mine. There is a suitable way to explore the marble canyon for everybody.
