Google Maps is lot more than a navigation tool for me. it’s a platform for storytelling, community building, and driving sustainable change. As a Local Guide, I’ve always tried to take my contributions beyond reviews and pins and photos, using the power of maps and the Local Guides community to spark initiatives that matter to both my country Sri Lanka and the planet Earth.
Fighting Plastic Pollution in the Mountains
In my article Let’s bring a bottle back #EarthDay - Saving Mountains from plastic invasion, I explored how simple actions like carrying reusable bottles can protect fragile mountain ecosystems. By mapping water refill points and raising awareness, I encouraged eco-conscious travel practices that reduce single-use plastics.

In X-Press-Perl Pebble Tracker - Let’s help to recover our Ocean, I emphasized the importance of monitoring and mapping ocean health. By spotlighting innovative tools like pebble trackers, we can raise awareness about marine pollution and inspire collective action to restore our seas.

With Ocean Guides - Turtle Conservation Meetup, I highlighted how the Local Guides community can support marine conservation. By documenting turtle nesting sites and conservation centers, we created visibility for initiatives that protect endangered species and promote responsible tourism.
Sri Lanka’s COVID Battle & Local Guide Response
During the pandemic, I shared Sri Lanka COVID Battle & Local Guide’s Response, showing how Local Guides stepped up to support communities in crisis. From mapping essential services to spreading verified information, we demonstrated that digital tools can be lifelines in times of uncertainty.
Connecting During Crisis Globally
I also organized World Wide Meetup - CORONA Vs Local Guides, proving that mapping isn’t just about places—it’s about people and resilience. Even in isolation, the Local Guides community found ways to stay connected and share hope.

In Small Business 360, we focused on empowering local entrepreneurs by ensuring their businesses are visible on Google Maps. By spotlighting sustainable and community-driven enterprises, I helped drive traffic to businesses that strengthen local economies.
Art as a Unifier
My post A WALL ART Trend bringing a Country together…!!! showcased how mapping public art can foster cultural pride and unity. By documenting murals and street art, I helped preserve creative expressions that bring communities closer.
Rediscovering Hidden Villages
With Discovering Hidden Villages - Ranamure, I emphasized the importance of mapping rural and lesser-known areas. This not only promotes tourism but also ensures that forgotten communities gain visibility and recognition.
Why It Matters
I feel each of these initiatives show how we could use Google Maps and the Local Guides community for:

Google Maps don’t just guide us to destinations, it guide us toward possibilities. By combining technology with Local Guide community spirit, we can chart a path that leaves a lasting impact on both our local landscapes and the global environment.
