Map legend items in My Maps - not clickable on mobile

Hello community,

I have a question about My Maps on the Google Maps app. When opening a custom map on a mobile device, I click on “View map legend” and can see the list of entities added. Unfortunately, I am not able to click on them so the map leads me to the corresponding location on the map layer.

On desktop, when I click on an entity, the map centres on its location.

This happens for each custom map, and is not an isolated case. Is there something I could do to influence the map interactivity on mobile?

Thank you in advance!

Hi @KimDIv

Thanks for sharing your idea.

I tested and can confirm your finding. But I’m having a hard time to imagine how this should be possible with the limited screen real estate on phones.

What would you like to see happen when you tap on an entry on the list? Should the list be hidden to just show the map zoomed in showing the entry you tapped on? And how would you help people get back to the list? I mean it won’t fit to have both the list folded out and the nap shown on my screen.

Cheers

Morten

PS I’m unsure if there is a forum dedicated to My Maps where thus discussion would fit better.

Here is the link to the help pages related to My Maps :

Hi @KimDIv

This is in fact an issue, due to the fact that the My Map Legend cover all the space of the screen, and there is no way to close it.

What is missing when you open the legend in Google Maps App is the arrow to collapse the legend.

I will try to report the issue to the Google Earth team, as they are the ones who follow the development also of Google My Maps, @Raleigh

Google My Maps works perfectly on a browser, even in mobile, and in fact, after the deprecation of the Google My Maps for Android in October of 2021, what Google suggest is: “To continue to use My Maps on your mobile device, open your web browser and go to mymaps.google.com”.

You can test it by copying this link (it is the last My Maps I created) and opening it in your browser, or explore the embedded map in this post

How wonderful to see so many useful replies, thanks a million @MortenCopenhagen and @ErmesT !

@MortenCopenhagen - indeed, I am struggling to imagine how the UI should change, so it serves best. I am imagining something like this -

When you first open the map, the screen to display the map, and at the bottom - “View map legend” pop-up screen to appear - similar to google map:

And when the user selects the entity of desire, the legend to minimize again. I believe this is what @ErmesT is suggesting as well.

Also, as far as I know - there is no My Maps forum.

@ErmesT - many thanks for escalating this to the Google Earth team, I was not aware of the relation between My Maps & GE. I actually submitted feedback in Google Play months ago, yet no reply followed (or resolution), as probably this topic is of low importance.

Also, thank you for quoting the suggestion by Google, I tried it and it works! This is exactly how I imagine it to work on Google Maps app as well.

I am looking into options on how to make it as simple as possible for customers, because the map I am creating is going to serve the visitors of a large resort. The embedded map is a great suggestion, thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, @KimDIv

Google My Maps is not used by a wide number of users, and most of them are embedding the custom map in their website. This is probably the reason why the team is not working to keep the new versions Google Maps App fully integrated with the functionality of My Maps.

I am happy that you are using My Maps, because is a tool that I love, and I have stressed the use to the limit, for maps like Local Guides Clean The World - The Map , with hundreds of events linked, or Accessible Life in Google Earth - The program is now Public for Everyone to contribute and is based of an integration between Google Earth an Google My Maps, with custom maps created by the contributors, and Google Earth used as a search engine.

Reading your post, I believe you know My maps very well, but if you are interested, I have made my own users manual, a bit more detailed than the official help page :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @KimDIv - I would like to use My Maps on my mobile so much more but without being able to click on an item in the legend that takes you to the position on the map makes it pretty useless. The idea of opening my map in a browser and working from there does work but as you (or someone mentioned) you cannot close the legend once you have opened it (except by touching the slice of the map visible but then your legend choice is lost).
But I think I have found a quick and dirty work-around:

Make sure auto-orientation is active on your mobile device.
Open your My Map in a browser.
Select “LEGEND” to show the legend.
Select a pin from the list (the position will be shown in the slice of the map).
Now tilt your mobile device to landscape (and back to portrait if needs be) - this seems to turn of the LEGEND
