Map Edit- The Power of Streetview Imagery

What is that one thing you wished you knew when you first became conscious of your status as a Local Guide?

  1. I wished I knew how to add a place and be sure that I had done it correctly
  2. I wished I could add places to Maps even while not physically present

You know, like many of us, I was unconscious I was a Local Guide until 2020 when I got the prompt to apply for Connect Live. Before then, I get prompted by Maps to add up places I visited and I did just that, I never knew I was helping anyone or my Photos or reviews were going to be important or make any difference.

Well, I guess that is happening…

I have created several posts on Mapping but I think my favorite has to be this Meetup I held; Best Practices for adding a place to Maps, because it addressed my two concerns stated above.

The simple rule of thumb I have employed in recent times was something I learnt from Ermes; “The Streetview changes according to the address you input”.

So, the only way you can be sure you have added a place correctly is to check the Streetview. Sounds easy, right? Not at all, often times (especially in Nigeria), the numbering systems and names of the street as we have them on the streets are quite different to what we have on Maps.

For example; I remember trying to find my way to the Gilead Hill Specialist hospital (pictured in the Streetview screenshot shown below) in June,2022 before they moved to their new location (as currently shown on Maps) in August,2022. For context, I was going to see a ‘Pain Specialist/Anesthetist’ at the hospital.

The address was;No 1 Abiodun Ogunyanwo street, off Ewusi Street, Makun, Sagamu, Nigeria which Map wrongly named; ‘Ogunlesi Street’ and numbered ‘14’ :sob: . I circled and circled looking for No 1 Abiodun Ogunyanwo street, off Ewusi Street, Makun, Sagamu, Nigeria as Maps misdirected me before I decided to ask Humans, I mean; “where the help of Maps fail, Man comes to the rescue” and I was directed to Chief Ogunyanwo Street.

Here is a collage of what I looked like before I left the house and how I looked while waiting at the hospital lobby to see the Doctor.

My smile had disappeared!

After I returned home, I tried to report a problem on Maps, attached is the photo showing the correct Street name which should be changed from Ogunlesi to Chief Abiodun Ogunyanwo but my edit remains pending till date.

  • The name of the street on a sign post

  • The hospital address

That brings me to the point that; "the more you perform a particular action on Map, the more likely you are to get approvals for it", I rarely use the ‘Report a Problem’ option to;

  1. Add a missing road,
  2. Correct road names

and other options related to roads, so, I have discovered performing any of these never gets approved. Is there a hack? If you know one, please share with me…

This is why I have decided to share this post with people especially newbies who may be finding it hard to add a place to maps or who may get frustrated because their edits do not get published.

Even though this is a ‘How to’ post, I have added elements to make it as interesting as possible for you, so you can learn and catch some fun at the same time.

My Photo Walks/Photo drives

When I go on my Photo walks orPhoto drives :tired_face: (yeah, cars are quite important in this mapping journey);

  1. I take several pictures, taking note of buildings that stand out with the hope that; they will most certainly be on Map already
  2. I take note of specific features on the buildings I see keeping in mind that some of the Streetview may be outdated
  3. I try as much as possibleto take pictures of buildings that are in ‘proper lighting’
  4. I hold my phone steady to avoid blurred pictures

Map Edits

When I return home, it is time to use the pictures I have taken, right? So, how do I add these photos to Maps?

Before I became aware of the Power of Streetview, I use the ‘share’ option from my Phone Gallery. Later, a Senior-Local-Guide advised that it is better to share pictures from Google Photos but none of this really helped in the way I wanted it to because after I became more experienced, I realized that; neither of these methods can give a foolproof result.

Now, I add places to Maps using 'Streetview’. How?

  1. I begin with the first picture, check it out on Streetview and work my way to the last
  2. Where a POI (Point of Interest) is missing or is wrongly placed on the Map, I take note of the time difference in pictures between the last recognized POI and the one I cannot find and begin to work my way up
  3. Where a Streetview has become outdated because of the change in the color of the buildings, I check the ‘features’ on the building
  4. Where a business has moved, has duplicate locations, incorrect phone numbers, appears to be permanently closed, there is a change of business, I put a call through to the business owner to confirm. Afterall, of what benefit is a business on Maps if the customers cannot locate it

Practical time, Shall we?

So, let’s put all of these points into perspective using my last Photo Walk/Drive which began on the 11th of November and ended on the 14th of November, 2022.

  1. The first picture (Day 1) I took was of the GTCO, Ejigbo and the last (Day 4) was Covenant of Zion Schools, Ijegun
  2. When I wanted to add a picture of Hotpack, Surulere, I checked the Streetview at the Location and discovered, I could not see any building that looked like it. So, I had to resort to the picture I took before (The Rose of Sharon Foundation) and the one I took after (Eminent Twins Mall) in helping me find the correct location. From the unique features on the building; ‘the tiles’, I discovered that the correct location was at 7, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, the same place Ukoh Stores is located not at 16, Adeniran Ogunsanya. I was also able to put a name to the small shop attached to the front of Hotpack, Surulere, since the name had completely wiped off the sign at the store front. My edit is yet to be approved
  3. From the example given above, you can see that; the building on the Streetview is blue, while the new building is white. So, while the Streetview may be outdated, certain features can correctly help you find the correct location.
  4. Before a place is permanently closed, sometimes, we have to put a call through. Let us look at Waterlilies, it is located in the same place Lite house 27 used to be and has a night club called Lounge 27. Before marking Lite House as permanently closed, I had to contact the Waterlilies management to be sure Lite House did not do a renovation and changed their name

I had some calls with other business owners too, I made a total of 109 (one hundred and nine) edits, which include;

  • Place addition (place creation)
  • Map Marker adjustment
  • Marking a place as closed
  • Correction of names

Out of the 109, seventy six (76) have been published.

I had a lot of fun!

Here are some of my favorite pictures from the Photo walk/drive;

  • I love this picture! it shows just how beautiful the Lagos Skyline can be. It had a duplicate which has since been marked as such. Havana Specialist Hospital

  • Ahhaha :joy: This right here is an exceptional one! When you talk about the Yorubas and ask about their food, this is what many will most likely tell you; Amala. So, we visited; Amoke Oge to have a taste of their Amala. You see that ‘excessive palm oil’ on the food is a ‘delicacy’ on its own.

  • The first picture taken on Day 1, the first featured photo of the Photo Walk. To go on a 4 day adventure, you need money, right? so, the journey began from the Guaranty Trust Bank, Ejigbo which has now become a subsidiary of GTCO Plc (Guaranty Trust Holding Company). Can you see the man in the Green attire? He is a Bureau de Change Merchant, they hang around the bank, looking for someone who may be looking to change their money or exchange their gold. You hear; “fine sister, dollar, gold?”

So, what’s your favorite part of this write-up? Do you have a tip you would like to share with me or with others?

Have you taken a photo walk in recent times?

Hi @Ewaade_3A

Thank you for.sharing this

It took time, energy also money to explore those places and edit. I appreciate that.

Keep up good work.

Exactly!

You know these things.

That ‘money’ part deserves a special highlight.

Thanks for understanding my ‘sleepy’ article. Now, it’s time edit the errors.

Interesting post, friend @Ewaade_3A .

As rightly mentioned by our @Ddimitra ,

You have dedicated a lot of resources to prepare this…of course, your TIME being the most important one.

Your photos are impressive.

Is this post an outcome of your November exploration?

Some points are really interesting…

Thanks for sharing…

Best wishes

Hi @Ewaade_3A

You wrote

“2. I wish I could add places to Maps even while not physically present”

This statement might help cement the myth that you need to be on location to create a new place. I’m living proof it is a myth. I have added 800+ places and only once I tried doing it on location - and it failed. Doing it from your computer at hope will make it a lot easier to find and check the details needed to create a new place.

You may find the following post from my Easing frustrations series interesting and helpful:

All the best

What is that one thing you wished you knew when you first became conscious of your status as a Local Guide?

There were two things I wished I knew when I first joining the program; “adding a place to Maps without being physically present was one of them”.

I have lost count of the number of places I have added to Maps from the comfort of my home by exploring the power of streetview.

I am still editing this post, I made it in one hour during my bedtime yesterday.

Thanks for your guidance, you have been there for me from the first week I joined this program

Hi @Ewaade_3A

How / where did you attach a photo when suggesting a new road name?

If your road name edit does not get approved after 1-2 months you can seek help in the Maps Support forum. Please include the photo evidence AND a screenshot of the acknowledgment email you received shortly after suggesting the correct name + a screenshot showing if the edit is still pending or rejected.

Here is the link to the Maps support forum.

Cheers

Wow! Morten, you read my post twice?

That’s a lot of work and I appreciate you because you took in every detail.

I have graduated, right? :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Thank you so much for the tip on the Maps Forum, I will check it out @MortenCopenhagen

I appreciate, Morten

Update:

There is a flood of information on that page, one could get drowned in it.

Please confirm if this is the right link

Hello again @Ewaade_3A

I gave you the other link because it helps you remember to do a search prior to creating a new question, but the link you shared is also very usable. I’m currently learning to use the maps support forum, where I hope to graduate to the next level ASAP :wink: The support forum is quite different from Connect in many ways.

You never answered my question about where we can attach photo evidence when suggesting name changes to a road. I just want to learn.

Cheers

I never answered because I know it is a Trick question, you cannot add a photo while editing a road.

@MortenCopenhagen

But your question got me thinking :thinking: because this incident (of the hospital visit) happened 5 months ago…

How did I do that?

When did I do that?

Yes, dear @MortenCopenhagen ,

I too have added many places from my laptop from home; however, I have added the places which I have visited.

What sort of places have you added, LG @Ewaade_3A ?

Has the “TRUST LEVEL” has anything to do with approval of edits?

Regards to you both…

:pray:

Yes, the trust score is what can influence the outcome of edits and additions of new places., @TravellerG .

The trust score is not something magical. Actually it could very well be that trust is primarily us getting more experience and hence avoid making edits that are unlikely to be approved.

I have noticed that happens a lot. Can you send the link of the particular one you are talking about?

Also, I have realized that; trying again at a different time works. So, you should try it some other time.

Thank you for taking your time to read one more time. I feel good when one of my teachers read my work especially when it comes to things like these @TravellerG

In addition to what Morten has already said, I will answer your question in two parts

I have heard about the mysterious ‘Trust score’ for quite some time now but after a while, I have some reservation about whether there is even a ‘Trust score’.

Let me tell you why.

After I became well and started moving around, I was travelling alot between April and September, So, I was adding a lot of places to Maps and making a lot of edits which got approved as soon as possible.

From September to November, I wasn’t going around as much, when I started Map edits during my last walk, my edits took a little longer to get approved on the first day than on the the 5th, 6th day and onwards of my ‘Map edit journey’.

So, I think it is more like a 'how often do you come to my house?’ kind-of-stuff, the more you visit Maps and perform a particular action, the more likely it is ‘able to recognize you and trust’ that; you can perform that action effectively without rigorous examination, cross examining, etc. Before approval.

The Trust score will make better sense to me if it can be explained in light of this; “Does the Trust score drop? Does it fluctuate?”

The second part;

Hmmm :thinking: :thinking: :thinking:

I have to visit a place to know it exists, right? Which is tantamount to me adding the places I have visited but the word; ‘visit’ could be ambiguous, you know;

Do you mean ‘visit’ as in going into the place a d experiencing it? Or just visiting the location and taking photos as we do during our Photo walks?

For the 1st one, I write Reviews of a place only after I have experienced it.

While I add places to Maps as long as I know and have seen that they exist and I know the location using the Streetview as a Guide.

I hope I have been able to answer you satisfactorily
