Of course Varanasi is a very famous city. The Banarasi fabric prepared by the weavers here is world famous and the Banarasi paan is an excellent mouth freshener. But the thrill that can be felt on the banks of river Ganges, the soul of this ancient historical city, is probably nowhere else.
There are about 84 ghats built on the 3 kms long banks of the holy river Ganga, all ghats are well developed having stone steps, landings to access the River, and all are the centers of religious faith, as well as loved by most of the tourists. Each Ghat is having boat jetty and boat rides are the wonderful experience. Among these Ghats Manmandir Ghat is quite popular among the tourists pilgrims and devotees, located close to the Dashashwamedha Ghat in Bengali Tola.
Around the end of the sixteenth century Raja Man Singh who was a trusted general in Akbar’s army and was included in the nine gems of Akbar’s court. He built this beautiful ghat and the aesthetic palace in indo Mughal architectural style. So it has got the name Manmandir Ghat as before it was known as Someshwar Ghat.
This magnificent palace is known for its highly decorated windows with delicate carvings. Having many halls, rooms, courtyards and Jantar Mantar is located on its roof. Visitors can enjoy the panoramic views of surrounding Ghats from the terrace of this place. The exhibition of Kashi and Ganga paintings is worth seeing in the halls of this palace. Manmandir Ghat is famous for many temples located in the vicinity of this Ghat which are the major attractions among the pilgrims, devotees and tourists. Major temples are Rameshwar temple, Sthuldanta and Someshwara temples. Chief diety means Linga of this temple and Somnath’s temple Linga are identical. Devotees used to offer worship in these temples during their stay in Kashi and local devotees worship everyday.
