Day 3 of Fazz and Irena’s Adventure Up North. Manchester Local Guides and Irena and Fazz met at the Spring European Meet Up in Ghent; wanting maintain and firm up links, we are excited to host as they venture up north to our home city of Manchester and its environs. Having spent Day 1 in Manchester itself, and Day 2 in the Greater Manchester town of Stockport (see other MeetUp events), Day 3 will be in the more rural Manchester commuter belt, centred around Clitheroe. You’re welcome to join us although car capacity limits numbers Clitheroe itself is a small market town, with an ancient castle - we will also visit Stonyhurst - the area which inspired many of the settings of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and do the Tolkien Trail, exploring the original Shire. We will also visit the quaint village of Downham - setting for the original Whistle Down The Wind film (1961 Hayley Mills) and more recently the BBC series Born and Bred. Relaxing for afternoon tea at The Inn at Whitewell, picturesque centre of Her Majesty’s Duchy of Lancaster Estate, and where it is said she would retire to, if she could, we will also visit Dunsop Bridge cafe where the queen has ‘popped in’ and also home of the geographical dead centre of the British Isles - where a commemorative phone box marks the spot. After the official event closes, there will be the opportunity to socialise and partake of some local ales around the UK’s longest bar at Holmes Mill, or in one of the quieter local pubs.
