Manchester LG May 2021: Bury Markets & ELR Heritage Railway Photowalk

Because we can…we will! Bringing our group back together again in real life!

On 19th May, many UK Covid restrictions will be lifted and we will again be allowed to meet in groups - remembering social distancing rules etc at all times.

To take advantage of this return to some sort of freedom, we have planned a photowalk meetup to one of Greater Manchester’s 10 towns, on the first Saturday after the restrictions are lifted; so here’s the plan…

12 noon Meet at Bury Interchange (end of the Bury Line Metrolink so easily accessible from the city centre). We will meet at the top of the escalators from the platform.

Brief walk to Bury Market Bury Market is considered the UK’s number one outdoor market, and retains many of its traditional features, including selling traditional Lancashire Food. We will eat and drink there as we explore the great variety of stalls, goods, and Lancashire folk to be seen - with the local expert knowledge of Manchester Local Guide @Maria68 to help. We can wander solo, in groups, or altogether as the whim takes us - taking lots of photos to add to Google Maps, and reflect the uniqueness of this venue.

2.15pm Gather together for the brief walk (10 minutes) to the Bolton Street Station of The East Lancashire Heritage Railway.

2.50pm Take the steam hauled train on a round trip to Rawtenstall - taking photos en route, or sitting back and enjoying the retro experience. There will be a 20 minute turnaround at Rawtenstall, with opportunity to leave the train, and take more photos of the live steam locomotive, before the return journey leaves at 3.45pm

If you intend to join us for the train journey part of the photowalk, please book your tickets in advance here. Note that although the tickets SAY 9am, they are in fact valid for round trips over the whole day.

4.20pm is our scheduled return time at Bury Bolton Street Station - you might want to leave at this point after a tiring day, or join us for a quick liquid refreshment at Trackside Bar to whet your whistle before your walk to the Metrolink station and home.

Feel free to join us for any part of, or all of the day at Bury Market and East Lancashire Railway - we are a thriving Group of Local Guides, but would be very welcoming of guests. other Local Guides or anyone just wanting come along.

Please take loads of photos to update Google Maps, gather information to update Google Maps where necessary, add your photos to the photo album we will share, and most of all, enjoy the day. Please RSVP using the link at the bottom.

Parking hint:

if you plan to drive to the MeetUp, Radcliffe Metro Station has a massive Park and Ride (M26 2SU). It is just one stop away from Bury, and is ideal for free parking and visiting Bury Centre.

UPDATE: Hi everyone - everything’s looking good for tomorrow. The weather forecast is fair (overcast with about an 8% chance of rain). Don’t forget to bring something waterproof just in case that 8% becomes a reality; Lancashire weather is unpredictable. Underfoot is well surfaced all the time, so no special footwear is needed.

We’ll eat on the hoof at Bury Market (if you wish). Maria knows some good food stalls to cater for all tastes.

See you tomorrow at noon at the top of the escalators at Bury MetroLink station. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

I wish I would be able to come @PeteMHW I look forward to your recap :slightly_smiling_face:

It’d be lovely to host you @PaulPavlinovich - and just as lovely to meet you. One day maybe you’ll be here! Till then, look out for the recap, which I’ll follow up with when the MeetUp is over!

All the best for your meet up, photo walk, good to hear they restrictions are uplifted but still take precautions.

Thanks @RosyKohli . I’m sure it will be a good day, but we will definitely be asking everyone to follow all the local safety and covid requirements. The health and well-being of ourselves and the whole community is paramount.

We hear things in India are not so good at the moment. I hope you are managing to stay safe and well. You are all in our thoughts.

Amen @Durojaiyeolaunde1

Thanks @indahnuria No we haven’t done any real life MeetUps since last July either. They’ve been forbidden by our government - and in any case they wouldn’t have been safe. But now the government has reduced the restrictions here because the virus is under control at the moment in this country. But we will ensure that we keep all the required conditions and hope that the virus remains under control here and is soon controlled across our lovely planet. We long for a safe world to google in for everyone.

@PeteMHW I’ve RSVP’d and bought my rail tickets. Thanks for organising this photo walk and I’ll see you there! :grinning: :+1:

It’ll be great to see you and catch up with you again @AdrianLunsong Thanks for your reply - I’m looking forward to the event.
