The 1819 Manchester massacre of peaceful demonstrators on Petersfield, by the authorities of the time, was shortly after the 1815 Battle of Waterloo and so it became known as Peterloo. It was a very big step in the British enfranchisement of working people, setting discussions rolling in London about universal suffrage, and the representation of the people - it was also kernel in the establishment of The Manchester Guardian (now the national daily The Guardian) as the reporters wanted the true northern story to be written, and not reported from a London perspective.
Join Manchester Local Guides on Friday 16th August, exactly 200 years to the day, as the city commemorates the Massacre publicly.

Afternoon: free time - maybe a meal together in the Petersfield area. Engage with other commemorations taking place around Petersfield. Take and publish photos of the commemoration in the city - there will be lot going on and many photo opportunities.
