In honor of accessibility Month, I will dive into some ways to make your community and own local Map more accessible for everyone.
As Local Guides, we play a crucial role in making Google Maps a helpful resource for everyone. One of the most impactful ways we can contribute is by adding accessibility information. Let’s dive into how we can make Maps more inclusive!
How to Add Accessibility Info
Google Maps makes it super easy to contribute accessibility information. Here’s how:
- Open Google Maps: Launch the app on your phone.
- Go to “Your Profile”: Tap the menu (the third tab on the bottom of your screen) and select “Contribute.”
- Uncover Missing Info: Look for “More Ways To Contribute” and tap “Check The Facts.” You might also see “Answer questions about a place.”
- Answer Accessibility Questions: Google will show you a list of nearby places and ask specific questions, such as:
- “Has a wheelchair-accessible entrance?”
- “Has a wheelchair-accessible restroom?”
- “Has wheelchair-accessible parking?”
- “Has a wheelchair-accessible elevator?”
- “Has wheelchair-accessible seating?”
- Add Photos:
If you can, add photos to show accessibility features. This can be incredibly helpful!
Pro Tips for Maximum Impact
- Be Specific: Instead of just saying “wheelchair accessible,” note if there are any steps, the width of doorways, or the availability of ramps.
- Add Details in Reviews: Even if there isn’t a specific accessibility question, include comprehensive accessibility information in your reviews. For instance, mention if a restaurant has large-print menus or if a park has accessible play equipment.
- Look for Hidden Gems: Some places might not explicitly advertise accessibility, but they could still have features like a side entrance ramp or a quiet room. Keep an eye out!
- Flag Inaccurate Info: If you come across incorrect accessibility details on Maps, you can suggest an edit. It’s just as important to correct misinformation!
- Use the “Contribute” Tab Directly: Sometimes, it’s faster to go to the “Contribute” tab at the bottom of your Maps app and look for “Answer questions about a place” or “Add a missing place.”
- Join Local Guides Meetups:
Connect with other Local Guides to learn more, share tips, and even contribute together on accessibility mapping walks!
- Use the Lens Feature: Use Google Lens within the Maps search bar to quickly identify places around you and access their information, then check for accessibility details.
Let’s Make a Difference!
By taking a few extra moments to add and verify accessibility information, we can make a huge difference in the lives of others. Let’s work together to create a more inclusive and accessible Google Maps for everyone!
