Major earthquake rocks Taiwan

In October last year I participated in the Connect Moderators face-to-face brainstorming meet-up in Japan. After this session, my lady and I visited the beautiful island of Taiwan. I wanted to write a post about my travels to both Japan and Taiwan, but sadly my available time since then hasn’t allowed me to do so. However, with the breaking news today that Taiwan has been hit by a major earthquake, I felt compelled to write this short post.

Today’s earthquake is reported to have been the biggest earthquake that has hit Taiwan in a quarter-century, with the above-7 magnitude tremor. As well as a number of deaths and many hundreds of injured, and as you can expect, buildings were rocked off their foundations and landslides have also been experienced in parts of the island.

My sincerest condolences to all the families of those who have lost their loved ones and I do wish the people of Taiwan including all of our Local Guides there, the very best. Hoping that you and your families are safe and well.

The cover photo of this post is of the amazing Zhupu Altar (Main Altar), which along with the many photos I took when I visited Taiwan, is yet to be added to Google Maps. If you ever get the chance to visit Taiwan, I highly recommend that you do so. It really is an amazing place.

Thank you @Stephanie_OWL . It’s breaking news Steph, in fact breaking while I was in the middle of preparing the March Leaderboards. Given that we were there only a few months ago, I was compelled to write a short post about this beautiful island, hit yet again by another major earthquake.

Ich habe es kurz vor deinem Bericht in den Nachrichten gesehen @AdamGT … Schrecklich!!!

Aber die Insel als solches ist wunderschön, leider waren wir selbst noch nie dort.

Beautifully expressed @AdamGT our hearts definitely go out to the people of Taiwan. I have been one of the lucky ones to have been able to visit this wonderful country and would love to go back again sometime in the future.
I feel great sadness for those that have lost loved ones and hope that our LG community are all safe.

It’s a beautiful island @Stephanie_OWL and the Taiwanese are beautiful people. If you get the chance then you should visit. It is amazingly hilly and very green. I took hundreds of photos and hope to share more.

Thanks @IzzyOz for your kind words and also for your appreciation. Having been there yourself you will well appreciate the beauty of the island and it’s people. Any earthquake is sad but major ones above-7 magnitude tremor are catastrophic. I’ve only just heard that this one was 7.4 on the Richter scale

I awoke to this tragic news this morning. As someone who’s had the privilege of visiting Taiwan and met many wonderful people there and as someone who’s also experienced a 7+ magnitude earthquake, my heart goes out to these people during this traumatic time.

Wow @MattGatlin you’ve not only visited Taiwan and met its people but you have also experienced a 7+ magnitude earthquake!!! That is really all just amazing Matt. Firstly, I’m so glad to hear that you survived that earthquake which must have been something horrific. You may not wish to share any details and of course I’ll appreciate and understand that but can I ask which earthquake was it that you experienced?

@AdamGT I was in Santa Cruz, California during the Loma Prieta earthquake of October 17, 1989. This is variously listed as a 7.1 (surface wave magnitude) or 6.9 (moment magnitude) earthquake.

It was a traumatic experience, and I sympathize with those in Taiwan today.
