The ruins of one of the supreme creations of antiquity, one of the wonders of the known world, which in its grandeur, beauty and significance marked the culminating achievement of the ancient Near East. Fabulous palaces, the occasional residence of the Achaemenid Great Kings. Darius I began the great construction at Persepolis about 518-516 B.C. It was not completed when Alexander of Macedon destroyed it in 330 B.C.
Persepolis was a sacred national shrine, potent setting for the spring festival, Nowruz.
