Perched high above the ghats of Maheshwar, 250-year-old Ahilya Fort watches over the serene and Narmada like a sentinel. Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar shifted her capital from Indore to this beautiful town named Maheshwar.
The imposing and majestic Maheshwar Fort stands on hill overlooking the Narmada River on the south. The fort rises straight out of the Narmada River to a height of more than 30 meters.
The fort as we see today was conceived during the reign of Ahilya Bai Holkar (1767 – 95).
Ahilya Bai, was the daughter in law of Malhar Rao Holkar, the founder of Hindu Maratha dynasty of Holkar, who ruled central India from Indore.
Once the residence of a Maratha queen, this is now a beautifully restored hotel offering a combination of tranquillity and grandeur and lip smacking food experiences.
