Main roads in cities: name is not displayed (German Bundesstraßen)

There is a quite bold issue with street names in Germany:
National roads remain void at a reasonable zoom level (overview), so you miss the street names of the most important i.e. main roads. Smaller roads are named instead..
(Bundesstraßen i.e. Federal Roads – federal = national bc Germany is a federal republic consisting of 16 federal states = Bundesländer.)
I already posted that question in the national product forum 2 years ago and the answer was just “probably a feature” – so the issue is still unsolved and in my eyes it’s a big bug, what do you think?

Tagged Ermes first as chief street editor, Morten second as general chief editor
Also mentioned the issue at Meet a Googler Xinmei, Engineering Director in April this year, without any response so far..

The screenshots are just examples, the problem exists in general. The creation date is June 2023, so 2 years ago, but except of the coloring all is still the same today.

Note: the German ß is just an ‘s’ but written differently - the Swiss write instead ‘ss’ but makes the vowel short what is not correct acutally, the vowel is long before ß.

I don’t know if this is helpful:

Roads can have more than one name in one language. I noticed this when known streets are named differently during navigation. You may want to check this by lining up some navigations and check if the missing names should show up = are actually in the database.

Hi Morten, yes: in big cities the street names change along the same road.
But that is not the problem here: the street names are present in the map, but only at a rather ridiculous high zoom level, that’s the point.

I would as not referring to the fact that a street can change its name. One strech of a road can have 2 names - not only in cities.

This street is called Tuborgvej, but it is also called O2 as seen on the yellow icons.

So is your concern that you need to zoom out too much to see the alternative road names? Or is your concern that the alternative names are missing completely?

This is not a problem specific to Germany, @makky , in fact, to be more precise I would say that this is not a bug, but simply the way Google Maps uses to display road names.
For comparison, I chose the place where Google Maps is constantly updated: Mountain View, where Google’s headquarters are located. As you can see from the link, there is no difference in the way road names are displayed.

Main roads in many parts of the world are identified primarily by a number, or in some cases by a sequence of letters and numbers. This happens in Germany, for example, but also in the US, and in my country (Italy). In many cases, the same roads also have a name.

One of Google Maps’ goals is to maintain map readability regardless of zoom level. This means, for example, always maintaining a sufficiently readable font size and avoiding excessive text density on the map. The information displayed therefore changes dynamically as the zoom level changes.
Let’s take the city of Berlin as an example (but this applies to any city in the world):
With a zoom of 5 km we see all the main roads identified with their number, the names of the neighborhoods, and some famous points of interest, as long as their name does not overlap with that of the neighborhoods.

At a zoom level of 1 km, we still see all the main roads identified by their numbers, while the points of interest increase significantly. The main public transport stations also begin to appear. Where the map’s density allows, we also begin to see the names of some streets.

We need to zoom in to 50 meters to get a view that allows us to see almost all the street names without them overlapping with the businesses in Maps
However, for main roads, those identified by a number, we have to zoom in to the maximum to see also the name.

This is how the display in Maps works, and again, it’s not a glitch, but a visibility setting.

Why, in your opinion, it is a big bug? I mean, how does this display create a difficulty for the average Google Maps user, and what kind of difficulty is it?
Would you prefer to see the street names instead of the names of any businesses next to them?
Can you elaborate on your perspective?
