#Mahabalipuram [08] Monuments near Tiger Cave - "Zone -1"- TravellerG

Caption: The cover Photo

This post gives you a general idea about ‘How to visit the Zone -1’. There are 6 POIs (& a vehicle parking area) and out of that, 3 POIs are very important.

Caption: Cover photo

  • Where to park the vehicle?

In the zonal map, the parking is shown (Sl.No: 5). The parking is very adjacent to the highway & closer to Tiger Cave.

TIP: If you are on a private vehicle, then you can get dropped closer to Lord Muruga Temple.

Note: do not drive deep towards Lord Muruga Temple as your car can get caught in sand dune. (First time our car got stuck & the locals helped us to get out)

  • What is the suggested sequence of visiting POIs?

Except for the parking area, kindly follow the sequence of the serial number provided in the Zonal Map.

Photo -02; Caption: The Thaniyamarthamman Temple Compound - a view from the North-West.

  • Which are the important POIs?

According to me, serial number 1, 3 and 6 are the important POIs.

Photo -03; Caption: The rock-Cut Shiva Temple - a view from the east

  • Photography:

Sl No: 1 & 3 have rock inscriptions, Sl. No 6 is excellent for Group photos & selfies. For POI 3 & 6, switch on HDR. Bright day is good for POI 3. Super wide, wide are the main modes (or lenses) needed.

Flash photography is prohibited in all the monuments of Mahabalipuram, in general; here, I have seen people using flash.

Note:

  1. Refer to our photos for the location of Rock Inscriptions & other marked points, etc.
  2. In this series, we will discuss only the important POIs for photography - POIs like beach, parking, etc, will be left to you to decide.

Brief of the POIs of the Zone -1:

POI -1: Are the ruins of a 2200 years old Murugan Temple; kindly read the post for further information (not yet published)

POI -2: A temple of very ancient idols, for which the shelter was constructed in 2013.

POI -3: Very important Rock cut Shiva Linga Temple (Atiranachanda Cave).

POI -4: The stone which became visible after the tsunami of 2004 which indicated the existence of a temple and its direction (Location).

POI - 6: One of the most famous monuments of Mahabalipuram - Tiger Cave.

  • Entry: Free (Dec 2020).
  • What is the approximate duration needed to visit the zone: Min 1Hour; beach not included
  • Preferred time of visit: Morning (the sunlight will be favourable for photography).

This makes me realize how much more there is to see than what is possible in just a single day trip.

I will definitely visit Mahabalipuram again.

“…Thank you for sharing even more wonderful photos of Mahabalipuram…” - welcome, friend @TusharSuradkar

“…This makes me realize how much more there is to see than what is possible in just a single day trip…” - thanks, after my one-day-evaluation trip, my first photo-shoot was for 5 days & went after a couple of months to re-shoot the missed frames; then, altogether the collection came to more than 10,000 photos.

Hope you will inform me, before your visit.

All the best

You mentioned:

“…thanks for the detailed description…” - you are welcome, dear friend @FaridTDF

“…archaeological site or is currently still being visited religiously…” = archaeological live sites &ruins.

Religiously: Officially there is only one temple - 27th POI in Zone -2. (Here).

Google Maps - Here.

Other few temples are being worshipped by the locals, of course.

“…You will know which ruler of the past had it built…” - Yes,

Although UNESCO has listed around 40 Monuments, truth is that there are many more; OK?

(Some have gone under the sea)

There are monuments from Pre-Sangam Period; however, the major activities have happened between 6th to 9th Century, under Pallava Emporers.

“…Greetings from Tierra del Fuego, Farid…” Thanks & wish you the same.

Technically speaking, it is one of the toughest shots as I am standing against the sun & it is extremely difficult to keep the LINGA (the object within the shrine) well exposed; usually the whole area will be dark - right? Here, I have taken an HDR (High Dynamic Range) shot & developed it to give clarity.

Hope you got me.

Yes, for me parking is important as I have to carry (safety) photographic accessories.

Thanks for your response

PS:

You indirectly reminded me about the missing serial number of the photos in the post - I have added Sl.Nos - thanks for the same.

Wonderful information TG

Thanks for sharing…
