Magical Blue Spring

The spring water here comes from the Mamaku Plateau, and it has been filtered for years to reach the surface, so the spring water is extremely pure and clear and will show an exciting blue.

Walk along the walkway along the Waihou River, passing wetlands and pastures along the way. You will also see small waterfalls, native forests and the famous Blue Springs, along with trout along the river. The pool water and the river are long and calm. It is a good place for swimming and a lot of quiet picnic spots.

The spring flow is as high as 42 cubic meters per minute, and it takes only 12 minutes to fill a 25-meter, 6-lane swimming pool. Springwater temperature is constant at 11 degrees Celsius all year round.

The Blue Spring trekking trip takes approximately one and a half hours, starting at Whites Road (National Highway 28) near Putaruru. You can also start from Leslie Road, which is a short walking route that takes only 15 minutes to reach Blue Spring.

The Te Waihoe Trail and Blue Springs are located near Putaruru in South Waikato. There are so many beautiful and fun places in South Waikato, you can easily compose a day trip. Taste the local handmade cheese at Over the Moon Dairy Company, take a mountain bike to challenge the Waikato River Trails, or enjoy fishing on the numerous waterways here.

The small town of Tirau brings together a large number of boutique galleries and gift shops, and further south, Tokoroa carries her forestry tradition, presenting visitors with “Talking Poles” And NZ Timber Museum.

Blue Spring is the best-kept secret - I only knew this place for 5 years considering I have been living in New Zealand for 20 years.
It was a great day trip for us - the trail was rather easy. The scenery is totally out of this world. It’s called Mini Jiu Zhai Gou (九寨沟) by Chinese visitors.

Entrance to the north
On the whites road, follow the stream to Te Waihou walkway, locate Te Waihou (whites road) Car park, walk from here to Blue Spring LOOKOUT is almost 4.5 kilometres;
South entrance
On Leslie road, locate the blue spring Leslie road carpark and walk to the blue spring less than one kilometre. There are parking lots at both entrances, and parking is free.

There is no rubbish bin here - please take your rubbish with you.
Beware of thieves - please lock your car.

Blue Spring has incredible resemblance to Monet’s lily pond paintings. New Zealand feels like a place out of this world, I really want to travel and experience the pure nature. GREAT photos. Thanks for sharing.

Hi @OliverKIWI

Wow these photos are unreal! The green is like a Monet painting! I absolutely love the last photo. The bright green and the water is so beautiful wow. People should really clean after themselves more, to keep our planet clean.

It’s sad to see at some natural places so much rubbish, but I’m also happy to see such well preserved spots. I’m sure this place is wonderful to go for a walk or picnic, wow. Thanks for sharing it.

@DanniS It is in pristine condition. The water is so clear and pure. and COLD. It became a tourism hot spot instantly. Waste is one of the three challenges we have according to Dr Jane Goodall.

@OliverKIWI Ah too bad for me as I’m a solo traveler and I don’t afford to rent a car if I go there alone. Anyhow thank you for the information.

Perhaps you can find some like-minded travellers to share the cost - you can actually hitchhiking in NZ. In general, it’s safe here. @Ant_Bad_Yogi

@OliverKIWI Thank you for the tips. Hitchhiking? Do you think it is safe for a lady?

In general, NZ is a safe place. There are a lot of hitchhikers here. A good practice is: take a photo of the car and a selfie with the driver before you hop and send the pix to your friend or post it social media :slightly_smiling_face: @Ant_Bad_Yogi
