#. MaGIC-8 – FOCUS - A Serious Topic - Simple Steps!

Thanks Dear @PaulPavlinovich for suggesting such an important topic; hope, I have done justice your expectations.

@DeniGu@ProfArunCM@Ravisawane@Vivekananda @Lera76 @JosephDewey @Justine2807 @Rezgar @Eire27

Session I.

A Blurry Picture is rejected by our brain, Immediately, (irrespective of the Value of the content).!

How to Get Good Focus, in practical environment?

[I understand that the topic is very vast & deep; these guidelines are for common people & primarily keeping the Mobile Phone Camera, in mind, although, almost, all these points are applicable to other cameras, as well]. A tripod stand can help alot, but not practical always (Will discuss, this topic, separately)

(I shall discuss this in, 2 Consecutive Sessions, for simplicity with Illustrations in, later)

Straight to Points:

#. Keep the Lens Clean (Dtails)

#. For now, ensure you are in “Auto Mode” of the Camera (Normally, the default mode).

#. Avoid Zooming [*1 see below].

#. Assure Good Light on the Focused object; (avoid very low light conditions)

#. Try to avoid Shaky Object as Main Subject (How to capture Shaky objects, later)

#. But, try to avoid Very High Light & Very Low Light Objects in the same frame.

#. Hold the Camera Steady. (Details Session II)

#. Try to use only the 80% of the Center Zone of the Frame (to avoid Lens distortion), for the important objects.

#. Try to Use the Rule of Thirds (Grid Lines) – minimum, bring the main objects towards the Center, middle rectangle.

Photo for Google Maps:

#. Try maximum to avoid prominence of people in the frame; if not possible, ‘Blur’ the Face of the (prominent people / unknown people).

#. Let the Frame contain those details, which a visitor wants to see;

#. Let the shot explain the importance of the destination.

Portrait & Group

#. Cheer the people in the Frame, (“Please Smile” …Ha…Ha…)

#. Ask the attention of the people (shout “Look Here”, smile, etc.)

#. Look for a reasonable Good moment,

Hereafter, be cautious!! You are going to be a “Creator” – be responsible!

#. Train yourself to hold your camera with care & responsibility (not to drop it; you may be in a crowd which may be pushing you, near a water-body or in a Zoo, etc.; do not embarrass people by slipping the camera)

#. Stand firmly on your foot (or sit properly, etc.)

#. Switch on the camera (in Auto Mode - Use flash, only if needed [Flash Photo, will be discussed], later)

#. Hold the Camera Firmly, ensuring the grip of the fingers, on the sides of the camera.

#. CAUTION: Ensure that your Fingers are not covering the lenses (keep away)

Now Ready? Don’t waste time…

#. Quickly, Stop Talking. (any movement of the body)

#. Take A Quick Deep breath, (& Hold the breath).

#. Touch the Main Object [*2] (preferably twice) to get sharp focus (AE Lock Details, later).

#. “Click” = Press the Volume (Up or Down) Button with the Thumb, without giving any jerk to the camera.

#. Click more than one shot for important frames & Groups.

(Breath Normally)

(Specifically, avoid pushing the Touch Screen button, as this will insert slight shake)

As a Photographer, I would quickly, Review (Play & View) my shot, before allowing the group to move.

All the best, Please try - I am sure, you will get some of the best, sharp pictures.

NIce post @TravellerG I would also add that using a tripod can greatly help in keeping the image sharp and in focus even in low light and longer exposure photography.

Yes, dear @Nick-Hobgood , but, practically the tripod is difficult to be carried (some times, not suitable, too).

Thanks for your attention

Hi @TravellerG ,

Thanks for another detailed, easy to understand and follow post! Very catchy title, too, well done.

I especially liked the stop-and-hold-your-breath tip.

I’m curious to see how you’re going to explain the topics of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. These are things I’m usually having the most issues with.

Thanks dear @DeniGu , I know you are a busy member in Google Team (attending many guides, like me), still, you find time to look into this; I appreciate your style & involvement with the topic.

“Tittle” is God’s gift… request you to give your regards to HIM.

Well, let me try, & see how, I can do with these three (humbly, most difficult) topics (to explain in simple & effective steps.

You, all Googlers & my audience are my strength, always…

Once again, thanks for your (everbody’s) motivational words!

God bless all…
