Madhi - A Mosque Tucked Away in a Mango Orchard

The Madhi Masjid is secluded from most other major monuments but certainly not abandoned by the ASI or Archeological Survey of India. Located close to the Mehrauli Archeological Park area in the southern part of Delhi that also hosts the Qutub Minar among a bunch of other formerly Hindu temples broken and converted during the medieval period.

When you see an entrance arch made of stones whose colors do not match with those used in the walls and other parts of the monument, it is screaming it was manipulated and most likely was a Hindu temple in the past. The Madhi Masjid is no exception. Additionally, the windows on the sides of the entrance are typical of the Rajput architecture with Kumbhs or pots supporting the balcony. Most notable is the dome that looks like shoddy work done by low-skilled masons in a hurry to give it a look different than a temple.

The Masjid is in tip-top condition right from the entrance and the ASI also has posted a full-time security guard who shared a thing-or-two he knew about the monument. After climbing the stairs and a majestic entrance as seen in the photo above there is a vast empty space and a wall at the end. There is also a nicely constructed well which is covered properly for safety.

The Mosque is tucked away in the middle of a Mango orchard along a narrow road that goes to the Mehrauli town. As a result, the Masjid premises are peaceful and silent as almost no one visits this little monument during the visiting hours. Mehrauli in turn is a corrupt word for Mihiravali meaning the residence of Varah Mihir a 10th-century Indian Astronomer who lived in this area and got many of the famous structures constructed in the area long before the Arabs arrived here.

Have you been to a historic place that is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city life? I’d be interested in knowing your experiences.

Until then… Happy Guiding ?
