Machhli Darwaza and Diwan e Am, Orchha.

Diwan e Am, Orchha Fort, Raja Ka Mahal, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India.

It will never be wrong if the glory of Orchha Fort is called Raja Mahal. The purpose of the Darbar e Am was to listen to the grievances and fariyad of the general public to fulfill the Rajdharma, which can be accessed through a huge, strong, massive arched entrance gate known as Machhli Darwaza. This grand and ornate Darbar e Am was built at one side of the outer courtyard which is connected to the Rajmahal.

This royal court was built by Raja Madhukar Shah who was the son of Raja Rudrapratap and brother of Raja Bharti Chand who ruled Orchha from 1554 to 1592 AD. The architecture of Darbar-e-Aam reflects the Mughal architecture. The bases and capitals of the pillars are decorated with stucco. The Darbar-e-Aam consists of three rows of pillars and their capitals are forming the base of multilobed arches and the entire slab is supported by pointed arches which are built on entablatures. It has three levels and upper most was for the King and King was able to access this Public audience hall directly from his residence through a private door. Adequate security measures were taken at Machhli Darwaza and musketeers were engaged to keep a watch. It’s one of the splendid architectural marvels still in good condition. Its ceiling is decorated with colorful bundela paintings. It’s a very popular attraction among the tourists and popular sight for pre-wedding shoot.
