Lviv - the gem of Ukraine

Lviv - breathtaking, romantic, charming & beautiful. Its a fact. But still, its pretty much hidden from the spotlight and in comparison with other European cities, its still not among the top destinations. However, thanks to the colourful history & background this city became one of the most visited ones in Ukraine and its well worth the visit for several reasons: handcrafted chocolate, beers, museums and churches among others. It`s also called the “City of museums” or “City of churches”. Lviv is one of those few destinations where travellers can find something for their taste for sure, doesn’t matter what they are into: adventures, sightseeing, city walks, pub crawls, gastronomy, leisure or anything else.

For this instance, Lviv truly deserves a short post (list) of places that been made on purpose for visitors and tourists. And this is why I`ve decided to share with you the 10 most visited places that should not miss any traveller going there for the first time.

1. Rynok Square (The Old Market Place)

One of the most popular places among tourists and locals. This place preserved the atmosphere of medieval times & it`s fully packed with picturesque buildings, antique sculptures and lovely tiny streets which are buzzing of souvenir shops and museums. ?

2. Mountain “High Castle”
This is a place with a quiet tricky name. Namely, on the territory of this park there’s no castle anymore but just the remaining stones/ruins of it. Anyhow, it’s a great place for a walk & to enjoy the views from the top of it in good weather. when the sky is clear you can see the panorama of the city and even the Carpathian mountains far away.

3. Lviv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre

One of the most spectacular historical objects in the city. The area nearby is the sparkling centre of social life. Built in classic style with forms and details of Renaissance and Baroque architecture also known as the Viennese neo-Renaissance style. Absolutely breathtaking and well worth the visit.

4. Armenian Cathedral of Lviv
Its a unique Armenian complex that includes a cathedral, an amazing monastery, bank and palace. This church is from the 14th century. Its full off priceless cultural inheritance such as frescos & reliefs. Pretty exiting, right? :church:

5. Town Hall

Austro-Hungarian heritage. From the very top, you can enjoy the great views and the panorama of the city. It`s stunning and worth the efforts of getting there by doing a couple of wooden steps. Unfortunately, there’s no lift available. Just do it! ?

These places are recommended for every single first-time visitor. Can be also considered as a 1-day itinerary. with a little bit of forward-thinking and planning it can consume just a couple of hours so you can save time for other activities or take a well-deserved break at a fancy coffee shop or a cosy pub. So, lets carry on. I cant afford to dont share with you guys these “open secrets” of locals that shouldnt be missed.

6. Lviv Handmade Chocolate (Львівська Майстерня Шоколаду ) ?

Located nearby the Town Hall and Rynok Square, this shop can’t avoid your attention. And it shouldn’t. If you looking for a treat or a unique present for your beloved ones that are waiting for you to come back from your trip - this place can definitely satisfy your taste. You don’t trust me? Check it & you can make sure too:

7. Beer Theatre - Lviv ?

The “Pravda” Beer Theatre is located just at the corner of the Town Hall and Rynok Square. It`s sizable, well-marked & very busy so it’s easily noticeable. Drop down a pin on your map here and make sure you pop in for a mouth-watering pint of freshly brewed beer. As I mentioned above - the beer can be a good reason by itself for visiting Lviv. And of course, they offer options for those who don’t consume alcohol. Have a look at:

8. Kryivka

The name refers to a shelter where the partizans used to hide during the times of war. What’s more, they expressed this concept in a very catchy way because this place is located right in front of the main entrance of the Town Hall but still a first time visitor could miss it easily. Why? Because there’s no sign on the entrance or outside the restaurant but instead a “partizan hiding” at the entrance in a uniform and asking for the password in advance to get permission to enter inside. Probably you wondering what the password is? Well, the locals are friendly enough to help you out with that. However, if you really curious and considering to visit this place to try some tasty food or shoot the dummies of “enemy-politicians” with an airgun, then I`m happy to share this password with you. Just let me know. ?

And now that we are fed, well-hydrated & our glucose level is also topped up - let’s roll on and discover what Lviv can offer at nighttime. ?

9. Rafinad People Club

Recommended for adults. Its a place for those who like music, dancing and “endless” parties. It`s considered one of the most prestigious night clubs in the city. Despite the popularity that this place enjoys it’s totally affordable. Check it out:

10. Aquapark “Pliazh”

For the families or people who are not really into parties but prefer to spend time having fun. I think there’s no need to introduce an aquapark to anyone but if you’re interested and would like to spend some time here you can check it out here:

Aquapark “Pliazh”

And that’s not all. I’ve listed only ten places but could be so much more. The museums (“Pharmacy”, “Arsenal”) or the churches (Dormition Church, Olha and Elizabeth Church) deserve a separate post. There’s so much to discover. So why don’t you give a try and experience Lviv yourself? Believe me, its worth it.
