Lunchout for a change- Egusi and pounded yam

Only for COVID-19 social distancing and restrictions, food crawl meetup is what’s on my mind for real, and that can’t be done on a virtual grounds. !!!

I don’t do this very often really but once in a while I suppose it’s no harm. I am out on an official duty at Ikorodu in the outskirts of Lagos, so getting home for lunch as usual isn’t an option. Therefore I decided on this little eatery and wasn’t disappointed at all. I opted for a local dish of Egusi soup and pounded yam. It’s a dish I can and often prepare at home myself. It’s also one of the local menu(Swallow dishes) that belongs to the west of Nigeria in particular. The south-East also enjoy this dish. It doesn’t cost a fortune mind you, it’s so pocket friendly and mouth watering and lastly very filling. It’s one of those things I missed when I was in Ghana, now am making up for it :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The soup is made up of water melon seed, red oil, pepper, tomatoes salt to taste, green leaves etc. My first and only foodie meet up so far was on Preparation of Egusi soup . It’s a meetup I will never forget easy, but unfortunate it was virtual.

Pounded yam, just as the name implies is yam pounded in a mortar and pistel. Well I enjoyed the meal this afternoon as well and just thought to share it with my connect biddies. Hope you enjoy and like the

Hello @SholaIB ,

Thank you for sharing this photo with us, the meal looks very original and delicious!

Is this a famous dish all over the country, or mostly popular in some particular areas?

Is there a special occasion on which this meal is prepared, or one can have it at any time?

It seems that you like taking pictures of your dishes, I suggest these helpful articles, where you can find useful suggestions: The lighting tip that makes food look delicious and 5 tips to consider when styling food.

Hello @BorrisS

Thank you for the prompt and good reply, and for the nice comments as well. Yes I like taking pictures of my dishes, either I eat out or home made. Am a foodie through and through, good food is good :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

  • As regarding your questions; It’s a special enough dish and could be used on special occasions like weddings and funerals etc. Nevertheless, it is a regular meal as Well, although it takes time and effort and it is a heavy meal.
  • I explained in the post that it is particular to western Nigeria and some parts of South East Nigeria. The Northern wouldn’t be into thstat all and the South South.Hope that answers your questions.

Cheers
