Lost orientation Gear 360 issue

Hello all again

Got my hands on a Samsung Gear 360 past two days and I’m super excited!

I shot lots of pictures as demo so far and it’s going fine. I ordered the Manfrotto tripod with the very small head to avoid obstacles while looking at the floor. Anyway, still testing and trying to find the best setup.

Major issue, the app on my android phone is not very fast so I do the stitching of images on a computer on Gear 360 Action Director. Works superbly BUT, when I try to upload via the android app, Street View, my panorama seems to have lost it’s horizon…

Ideas?

Thanks for sharing @ManolisV . I just moved your post here on the “Photography” board as it is the best place where you can share all your knowledge, ask other Local Guides for advice or learn and share your tips to get the best picture. We have many great photographers in the community. I am sure somebody will soon help you with this issue.

Many thanks.

Samsung GEAR 360 has no such option, it’s an action camera and do not record horizon.

Be prepared for tilted pictures if you don’t set up tripod picture perfect and level.

Yes I know, it sucks. Pricetag doesn’t.

You get what you pay for.

No I think I didn’t help you understand correctly.

I use a tripod. The hardware is fine. I made plenty of other panos with it.

This issue I face is with the software. When I stitch the image on the computer and send it back to the phone, it looks disoriented.

Yes, it has no orientation.

It’s an action camera, where ever you aim main lens, this is where it’s at.

If you stich with a software, be sure to aim it in correct direction and keep horizon strait.

If software don’t support that, you need to find another program that support it, this is very normal.

Unfortunately.

Compared to a theta that has compass and horizon always included in all images, this is what happens.

Please give a link to image, as an image says more then 100 words.

No you got it wrong…

Anyway, I managed to transfer some EXIF info from other files to the new ones created by Gear 360 Action Director software on the computer, so all pics look fantastic now on Google Maps :)!

Samsung GEAR 360 has a gyroscope and records pitch and tilt. However feeding the data back to correct pitch and tilt is not as quick out of the box as with the Theta

Agree, but the issue is located on the pc software, not stitching the image on the fly.

This is interesting @PeterGO !

Do you have a GEAR360?

If so, can you tilt it 45°, then wait for it to set pitch and tilt and take a picture. Post result here.

How long time you reckon it take to adjust pitch and tilt so it’s level?

Does it work like the Theta, upside-down no problem?

If so, then I see a use of this camera.

Hi ManolisV,

Regarding the issue that you faced, how did you go about fixing it? What software did you use to transfer the EXIF data?
I am having issues with orientation as well after using the Action Director software to do the image stitching on my PC.

(issue seemed much less pronounced when stitching using the phone app.)

Hello there,

no not really… Only chance I got was replace the updated graphic on photoshop, then transfer it back to my mobile and upload it via the android app…

Hello i’m having the exact same problem with the gear 360. i did it exacly like you, a’ve already tried to copy EXIF file form one that is working fine, but it did not correct it. What kind of fields of Exif files you copy?

Thanks for your attention.

All the EXIF information, but as I posted on some others with the same, I had to move on and buy another camera, since that one was so buggy… :frowning:

I have the same issue with photo taken by gear 360 (version 2017), not all photos, only some of them. The photo’s orientation is invalid, up to top, top to up. How do you fixed this problem? please give the metadata to fix it.

Hi tinyworld, I managed to solve the problem, what i did is part of the solution given before, i replace all the Exif data. Using the Exif-Fixer-Win free software i copy the exif data from a good panoramic photo and put it on all the photos.

However, after i used the Street View App to upload all the photos, it still had bad orientation. However i decided to wait a couple of days, i checked after 1-2 days and there where ok… So i really belive some of the original photos were ok, but i corrected the data from all photos and now they are finally ok…

I took this photos using only the camera, not conected with the phone. I think thats part of the problem also, since i used before the camera and the phone conected and never had this issue before… the camera did’n have gps data?, don’t really know…

I have had orientation issues with my Samsung Gear 360 (2017). Some photos have EXIF tag PosePitchDegrees at a really high value around 4,000,000. When I uploaded these to Street View, they had the vanishing point set at the ground instead of the horizon. I fixed them using Exif Fixer from http://panoramaphotographer.com/software/exiffixer/ and they then worked in Street View. You can also use exiftool from the command line.

I noticed another unrelated problem, which was that when I deleted photos and uploaded new ones there seemed to be a delay so the old photo would persist after I deleted it and the new photo would not show up straight away. That is similar to what you found, @Pskyto .

On a final note, my images did have realistic, varying values for the Pose tags (handheld shots), implying the Gear 360 is recording orientation information.

Hi @lefty74 thanks for your message, next time, if i had the same problems i’ll try to solve that way. Thanks…

And yes, i’ve notice that the old ones seemed to delay so the old photo would persist after i put a new one. However, even after one day still didn’t solve it…

So what i’ve done was using a trial software to upload the one time tour to Street View… and was perfect, of course…

But many thanks for your message. It will help in the future.

This solution works for iOS user who doesn’t have any Samsung device to connect the camera to.

Owned device: Samsung Gear 360 (1st Gen)

I had the same problem where every images that I took with the Gear came out tilted, even though I put the camera on straight platform (i.e. Floor).

I found this app called “edit360” from this site (This is not sponsored, I shared this because it’s the fastest way to align the horizon on the go especially if you don’t have laptop with you).

This app will allow you to adjust the image by tilting back and forth until you find it satisfying. Please do note though, the app cost some money (one-time payment) but it’s not expensive.

Works with: Any 360 images from your camera roll.

I’ve also got this issue, how did you resolve it please? Thanks

Hi there,

Can you please explain exactly what you did in order to fix this issue.
