Lost or Rejected 25% of my Roads Edit - TRAC

Dear TRAC enthusiast and LGC friends,

I’m an active member of the TRAC campaign since the beginning; more than 1 years ago.

We love to actively exchange tips & tricks on how to do better roads edit, how keep trace on where we where editing and HOW MUCH we had contributed.

About this point many of us come to the conclusion that the best and simplest way is to use an sheets where register the quantity of the mail we receive about “Your road edit is being checked” and “Your road edit was accepted” (new mail layout…).

I was / am registering all the mail since the beginning and this is the result of the last period: march to may.

Looking at these results, which in my opinion are very disappointing, a post by @MortenCopenhagen on this topic comes to mind: does it make sense?

It is really difficult to accept that, after receiving approval for more than 30.000 new roads, I still do 25% of error?

Till today I can count more than 20.000 edits lost…

This was one example of the hundreds of daily “rejections”.

You really want to tell me that I did a mistake connecting two existing roads ?(Inside the red circle)

Any suggestion?

@MarcoDavoli Was this one of your 90-Day rejections or a quick rejection? I sometimes wonder if the reviews are done on different image layers like @ErmesT was seeing between the edit screen and the live map. Either that, or you’ve found an art installation called “Looks Like Roads” and mistakenly attempted to add a road over it :joy:

I completely understand your frustration, @MarcoDavoli , and the data corresponds very much to what I developed. However, in order to answer your question, it is necessary to understand one more thing, and make some additional considerations. But let’s start with the data.

As you well know, a few days before the start of the last TRAC I wanted to do a test, to monitor approval and rejections.
In one day I added 619 streets into Maps, and then started tracking approvals. Obviously I had to wait three months to get the full picture, which is this one:

  • 10 were rejected immediately after submission (1.6%)
  • 158 were rejected after 90 days (25.52%)
  • 451 were approved (72.9%). Of these, 396 were approved in the first 20 days, while the remaining 55 were approved more than 60 days after submission

As you can see, my numbers are not so different from yours, but they have additional information, which is fundamental: Why were our edits rejected?

As you can see, over 25% of edits are rejected after reaching the fateful 90 day deadline. So no, you’re not making 25% errors.

This is where the real question arises: why doesn’t Google have time to approve 25% of our edits?

We may not like the answer, but we must realize that:

  • Nobody has infinite resources, not even Google
  • Resources are allocated according to investment plans based on expected ROI

Further analysis would also show us that the roads rejected due to overtime increase significantly 90 days after the start of a TRAC. It is true that the ability of Google Maps to approve the roads we add has increased greatly, but it is also true that the amount of contributions during TRAC is much greater than the “normal” one.

I created a graph (the values ​​are purely random) to illustrate what happens when te data submitted are higher than usual

What gives me hope is that, time by time, Google seems to be able to close the gap, like you can see in the screenshot here below.

But I don’t think Google will allocate more resources in a short time, and without an accurate evaluation of the Return Of the Investment.

So my last question is: What is the investment?

when I wrote about this I was misunderstood; and this because I was trying to be “polite” while saying "…am I doing so many errors? 25% is a lot…

Maybe during the TRAC event … yes, maybe. But we do not have any official data. Could be really interesting to know how many roads are approved / added by Local Guide or NON google person / computer whatever. I will be really surprised knowing that a group of 34 people can create so many problems.

About my 25%

In these days I started to check what was NOT ACCEPTED vs what went into the 90 days bin.

Looking at what I did during the 2,3 and 4th of April I found >300 not accepted edits that went into the bin because of >90 days and 2 NOT accepted edits that is did in June.

As a morning routing I often re-edit them (or some of them) and the two rejected that I did in June were “possibly” a mistake .

I checked 100 of the one I did on the 2 and 3 of April and ALL were absolutely correct.

The informations lack about how is working this process is what could cause “frustration”. Could, because despite this ROADERS will keep adding roads to our Google Maps.

@MarcoDavoli @ErmesT I started mapping around the time TRAC started, so I’ve been doing this for a bit more than 3 months. Over the past two weeks I’m getting a steady trickle of “Not Accepted” notifications in my Edits list, all dated 90 days prior. For example, today (July 5th) I see one such notification dated April 4th. I haven’t been able to engage in such intense compilation of statistics as you’ve done, so I don’t know what % of my Edits are being rejected. It is rare for me to get an instant rejection.
