Hi @Khalil_Jouf and thank you for your very interesting post, which raises some interesting questions!
In Italian, “Local Guide” literally means a local guide, a person who should be trained to accompany others to visit the city where he live (local). (Here in Italy, we have restrictions for becoming Official Tourist Guides).
This program offered by Google is much less restrictive and open to anyone. I’ve always seen it as a path of growth where, in addition to contributing honestly and genuinely by following the terms, you also have the opportunity to meet many other enthusiasts from around the world. And this is the greatest reward I could ever have imagined. The more appropriate name would be “Global Guide,” since we have no territorial limits on where we can provide our contributions. And you’re right when you point out that here we need to have much more expertise, as very often it’s not just about adding reviews and photos, but also substantial changes to what we’ve discovered in Maps!
A more current name might perhaps be “Globe Mind.”
“Globe Mind” encompasses the meaning of all the skills and attitudes that accompany us in this experience:
Computer skills: we must have a basic command of technology and the ability to navigate data, digital tools, and information flows, always respecting the Google Maps program’s terms.
We must be willing to have an open mind: we must be curious, not limit our vision to our national borders, and be open to welcoming and integrating people and cultures different from our own.
Learn and inspire: this, as noted above, for me represents the added value of the “Local Guide.” Experiences on our travels (real or virtual here on Connect) and our direct or indirect relationships with other Local Guides expand our culture and amplify our knowledge of what it’s like to live in other parts of our planet!
Perhaps I’ve gone on a bit too long, so I’ll conclude by wishing everyone the very best in continuing this journey that unites us!
