Lord Hanuman Temple as a Flood Level Indicator

Elsewhere in India, the flood levels are indicated using simple scales marked with feet or inches above the normal, this task is assigned to the Gods in Nashik.

Last week I was on the banks of the Godavari River in Nashik.
Here are statues of Lord Hanuman on both sides of a vertical slab hence it is Two-Headed or Du-Tondya Maruti.

When the water levels rise due to rains it first touches the feet of the Maruti idol. This is normal :heavy_check_mark:

When the water rises to the knees, there is nothing to worry yet :ballot_box_with_check:

However, when the water levels reach the waist, it is an alarming sign for the residents :alarm_clock:

And when the water levels reach the neck or face or the forehead that means RUN - time to leave the town :running_man:‍:running_man:‍
No one remembers any such incident in the past, though.

The other names of Lord Hanuman are Kesari Nandan, Maruti, Hanuman, and Anjaneya.

Lord Hanuman is believed to be the Avatar of Shiv.
Hanuman is a devotee of Ram who is the Avatar of Vishnu.

More tidbits about the Indian religious belief system:

  1. Bramha, Vishnu and Shiv are not gods, they are the supreme beings.
  2. No one worships Bramha.
  3. People worship the Avatar of Vishnu, prominently Ram and Krishna.
  4. Shiv is worshipped directly.

:bullettrain_side: How to Reach

The temple is within walking distance from the Nashik Bus Stand.

Take an auto from the railway station if you use that.

:shallow_pan_of_food: Where to Eat in Nashik

Try the famous Shamsundar Misal, a food joint serving the celebrated Misal - A spicy dish of Nashik.

:house_with_garden: Where to Stay in Nashik

I stayed at Hotel Vaishali which is within walking distance of the temple.

Fantastische Beschreibung mit der Höhe der Wasserstände, auf da sie auch in Zukunft nicht so hoch steigen, dass alle Rennen müssen.

Übrigens sieht es dort sehr schön aus :+1:

@TusharSuradkar At that time, the height of the Godavari river vessel reveals that the water of the river comes out ahead of the vessel and when there is a flood-like situation, the people of Nashik judge the water level by how much water the idol has gone into Accordingly, the water reached to the feet, the water reached to the knees, the waist to the chest to the mouth, by this we measure the water level. It is expected that you must have known this information for the first time in Nashik Meet-up

I am visiting Nashik since 1987 multiple times over the years.

This is common information @Shreeish - about the water level.

@TusharSuradkar Good pictures and information about the Godavari Hanumanji statue serving as a water level indicator. It also shows how science has been transformed into a spiritual city. If the water level rises, may be people are also reminded of Doha of Hanumanji if flood level reach to chest of hanumanji

This is a wonderful post, @TusharSuradkar and it also shows how humans could find a way to measure something very impactful. Fear and need are the basis of all the inventions, they said, and how true they are.

Cheers!

Truly said @RosyKohli

TV played a great role in educating us about Gods and our culture in the past.

Not sure how the new generation is getting better information.

I think you missed the meetup by a whisker.

Our next meetup in Pune will be organized shortly!

That’s is really interesting… dear @TusharSuradkar

Lord Hanuman blesses with flood indications - the folklore may have many more stories… Right.

Enjoyed reading your article and viewing the photo.

Yes, it is mostly a folklore @TravellerG

Since then, they have made many arrangements to ensure that flood level never reaches even the feet of the idol.

So, I doubt anyone remembers the waters reaching even the knee level as per the story.

Nevertheless, the story is interesting and sounds realistic.
