Looking for the extraordinary in the ordinary

I never started out to be a Google Local Guide. I never thought about it, dreamt about it or to be honest, even knew what that really was.

It all started with getting out of the house. Then going a little bit further everyday. At first, I could only manage doing it late in the evening when the world was winding down behind the safety of closed doors. It meant there were less people and noise outside. But for me, it meant more breathing space.

Along my exploration, I began to find all these extraordinary places in random ordinary places. Maybe it was a water feature or a view. Or maybe, something as ubiquitous as a tree. But it was so extraordinary precisely because of how ordinary it was.

“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness - it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude” ~ Brene Brown

The following is my list of 5 extraordinary places in Brisbane that I think are some of the best kept secrets. Not only do I think they are a bit special, a bit enchanting, they are free too!

(1) The Enchanted Fig Trees

In the evening, after the sun has set, walk along Goodwill Bridge in Brisbane towards the City Botanical Gardens. As you approach the end of the bridge, you will see the softest glimpses of light at the bottom of the path. You are now entering the City Botanic Gardens and the lights are from the 2 magnificent ancient fig trees on both side of the bridge. Dappled from top to bottom are cascading fairy lights that drape over the entirety of the canopy. There are plenty of places under the tree to sit, talk or play. It is quite magic and many a proposals have taken place under its starry roof.

(2) The Japanese Garden, Mount Cootha Botanical Gardens, Brisbane, Australia

Nestled at the foot of Mt Cootha, just minutes away from the Brisbane CBD is the Mount Cootha Botanical Garden. Over 52 hectares of green luscious woods and green open spaces, dotted with ponds, playgrounds, themed gardens and a cafe. But, it is The Japanese Garden within these sprawling grounds that is absolutely exquisite. Thoughtfully designed and beautifully maintained, the garden is an invitation to sit in stillness and observe the wonder of Mother Nature reveal herself before your very eyes.

(3) Camp Hill Antique Centre

Tucked away in an unassuming corner on the outskirts of the Brisbane CBD, Camp Hill Antique Centre is a treasure trove of wonders, curiosities and the most darling antiques. Spread over 3 levels and with a sweet little retro cafe, you could easily while away an entire day exploring the gems through time. From fun retro modern mid century furnishings to turn of the century fashion wearables, there is so much delight to feast your eyes upon.

(4) The Tropical Dome, Mount Cootha Botanical Garden

Step into the tropical climate-controlled atmosphere that is The Tropical Dome, it is as if you have stepped into the Amazonian rainforest. A perpetual soft gentle mist blankets the geodesic latticed structure. Except for the quietest murmur of water softly spraying in some hidden nook the dome is strangely silent. The air feels different and taste like the aftermath of a tropical monsoon storm. A winding circular path slowly rows up to the top where you will be treated to a completely unexpected water lily pond that features both flora and fauna unique to this ecosystem.

(5) Sir Thomas Planetarium

Whether you are an astrology fanatic or an amateur star gazer, the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is sure to enthralled and captivate your imagination. See the galaxy up close and personal at the Planetarium’s Cosmic Skydome or learn about ancient astrology through Skylore, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders knowledge of the stars. The planetarium will leave you feeling in awe and wonder of this universe.

I hope I have given you some insights into some of the best kept secrets of our city and you will take the opportunity to learn more about why we are so lucky to call Brisbane home. But most of all, I hope I have inspired you to look for the extraordinary in all the every day little things because nothing is ordinary and it is all about living the little things.
