I am looking for examples of Google Earth Projects to get an idea of what other people have achieved with this new capability on Google Earth.
There are almost none shared on Local Guides Connect, but to my surprise, I can find VERY FEW on the internet per see. The ones I found are mostly businesses playing with the tool and simply pointing to their business, without any valuable content.
Is it simply too soon to expect some examples to appear online, as this was only released a short while ago, or am I looking at the wrong places?
Personally, I think the new Google Earth Project capability offers Local Guides a great tool to promote their Google Maps Lists, Google Maps Profile and to promote their regional unofficial Local Guides activities, like Meet-Ups.
For good results, it takes a little time to create one, but the same could be said for a PowerPoint/ Slide presentation. Is that the reason why you have not created a Google Earth Project and shared it here on LGC?
Hi @ErmesT
Thank you for sharing your featured post. Great stuff! Your post on the official Google Earth page on FB was featured today at our Local Guides World Meet & Greet earlier today.
It so happened that I had been looking at the official FB page of Google Earth and wrongly assumed that #earthstories were the official stories on Google Earth and not projects by the community. You were only featured their yesterday, so they must have done it first on Twitter
I have been chatting quite a bit with different Local Guides in private about Google Earth Projects. Many Local Guides tell me that they either don’t have a desktop or think that their desktop is not powerful enough. Yet other people have told me that the heavy data usage of the app is a concern for them when they are on a limited data plan. During one of these discussions, a Local Guide suggested that we (the community on a whole, no me) should maybe organize special meet-ups at libraries or schools where good computers are available and Local Guides can play with Google Earth and create projects. I think it is a great idea, but since I don’t have an active community of LGs where I live, it is up to others to try this idea out.
Let me know what you think. Should I ask @IlankovanT , king of the Meet-Ups?
And yes, it is using a lot of resources on our desktop. That’s why I am so slow in building the series of project I have in my list.
As it is new, I hope Google Earth will develop a tool for mobile, to be integrated on the Google Earth app. ( @Raleigh )
My feeling is that it is a bit early to think about meet-ups. BTW, my feeling is that this is a perfect tool for schools.
It is a perfect tool also for companies and, since Google Maps helps the company to be found, I do not see in a negative way the fact that the company wants to use the tool to share the locations of its offices.
The most important point of creating a story in Google Earth is … to have a story to share.
I have seen some project that is nothing but a test for moving between places. My feeling is that we need to creata a bit of awareness, first of all, just to avoid to be covered by useless test.
On the meantime, Local Guides project need to be recognized. I am very proud of the official Google Earth’s post about me, because it can help others to develop ideas, but.
