#LondonGo - 160th anniversary of the London Underground🚇

On January 10, 2023, the London Tube, the world’s first underground railway, will celebrate its 160th anniversary. It was the great invention of 1863, the three-dimensional spatial transportation network.

At the time, they believed that demons lived underground. The difficulty of construction was not only physics, but also mental overcoming was an issue. That’s what it means to do something new.

The biggest contradiction is that steam locomotives that need to be ventilated run through tunnels. However, due to the use of anthracite, passengers were less likely to be smoked dishes (although it was still terrible).

The great thing is that it prevented sexual harassment from the beginning. In the 1900s London was electrified and Smoke retired.

I’ve only seen this crowd outside of Tokyo in London! It’s like being in Tokyo. This is by no means a bad thing, and shows that it is a resource-saving and rational transportation network. It is one of the conditions for a compact city.
However, in the case of Tokyo Metro, there are lines like tangled spaghetti, so it is easy to get on the wrong train. The door of London Tube does hit overhead many times, but compared to that, the route is easy to understand.
The modernization of Tokyo imitated London at that time, so the same culture remains.

You can study London Tube at the London Transport Museum and the Postal Museum. Moreover, you can ride on the Underground Mail Rail, which was top secret at the time. Don’t hit your head in the tunnel. Tube’s specialty is “Stray Mouse”, so don’t forget to bring a souvenir. You can meet a real little mouse at the station as many times as you want!

You can meet him at Paddington station too!

The Tube is very slender, about the size of two Oyster cards.

あれ、思ったより似ています

グージストリート駅はエレベーターに依存する駅ですが乗りましたか?大勢を乗せる業務用エレベーターがいくつも並んでいるので不思議な感覚になりました。

戦時中、防空壕となった駅ですね。 :flight_arrival: :metro:

Hello @YasumiKikuchi ,

this is very interesting! :grinning: :metro:

We have anunderground railway here in Hamburg, Germany too. :grinning:

It has at the moment four lines, but they’ll plan to build a fifth line in Hamburg in the next years.

A lot of cities in Germany has underground railways.

We call them: ,U-Bahn" here in Germany. :grinning: :metro: :de:

I very like it to use the underground railway, because it is more faster than a bus or a car, but unfortunately, we have the problem that they are often closed due to construction work here in Hamburg, Germany. :pensive:

We have to use an bus replacement service instead. :grinning:

What is very good about almost all the underground railway-stations here in Hamburg is that they are accessibility friendly, some are still not at this time, but fortunately, they are working to update every station soon and making them accessible friendly. :+1:t2: :wheelchair: :elevator:

Your Local Guides Connect-post is very interesting and all your photos are great! :star_struck: :bouquet: :metro: :star2:

Thank you very much for writing your informative post about the underground railway in London! :star_struck: :uk: :sparkles:

I wish you a great day!

Many warm greetings to you from Hamburg, Germany! :star2: :de:

Hello @ChiaraMariaC

Thank you for your high rating!

Thanks for letting me know more about the U-Bahn in Germany! I was interested. I want to experience riding someday.
I saw an underground map of Germany. This seems to be based on urban zoning planning based on typical rationality. As you said, they seem to have chosen to operate openly to all residents. So it gives rise to some unique realities.

I got a little information about it. is this accurate?

  1. The reality is unique.
    2, Yellow train body.
  2. Like Austria, where I visited 30 years ago, there are no ticket gates (some people choose to ride without a ticket because fines are cheap).
4, Live EDM music starts in the train.
  3. Passengers get on and off the train at a slow speed without stopping.
6, “XX-Bahn” is used for all traffic.

Hello @YasumiKikuchi ,

you’re welcome! :sparkles: :rosette:

Thank you very much for your interest about the U-Bahn in Germany. :grinning: :metro:

1.: I can’t answer this, because I didn’t used any underground railways in other countries yet. :grinning:

2.: The colors of the trains are red and white and the newer trains are red and silver in Hamburg. The U-Bahn in Berlin has a yellow color and in other cities they mostly are grey or white.

3.: Yes, here aren’t ticket gates too. On every station are ticket machines. :credit_card: Some people are choosing to ride without a ticket here too, but this is not okay. :grinning: We call these people: ,Schwarzfahrer" in english: ,fare dodger". If ticket inspection comes, they get of course a fine.

4.: No, live EDM music doesn’t appear in the trains. :grinning:

5.: No, the train stops on every station and the people get on and off when the train stopped.

6.: We don’t have only the U-Bahn here in Germany. :metro: We also have: busses :trolleybus: , S-Bahn (similar to an U-Bahn, but it often runs outside) :bullettrain_side: , trams :train: , suspension railways (only exist in one city in Germany, in Wuppertal) :suspension_railway: , ferries :ferry: and regional and long-distance trains :bullettrain_side: .

I wish you a great day!

Many warm greetings to you from Hamburg, Germany! :de: :star2:
