Lock ups in Google Maps

I’ve posted about lock ups of freezes in Google Maps before, see for example Google Maps locking up in Chrome on Desktop and More Lockups in Google Maps, but now, 3 years later, I’m experiencing this same issue in a slightly different scenario. Is this just me or is anyone else having this problem? A simple test case:

  1. My business review
  2. Select the photo to get the full view
  3. Maps locks up!

Does this happen to you?

Platform: I’m using the Google web app in Chrome on a Windows 10 desktop PC. This doesn’t happen when using the Maps mobile app.

No lock up when I visit your review using chrome on a ChromOS Flex laptop. I tried both your link and scrolling down to see find your reviews under the place sheet, @AdamGT

Thanks for checking @MortenCopenhagen . Something really weird. I’ve just tried on another PC and again, once I select the photo to view Maps locks up. Interestingly, as shown in the screenshot below, this time I’m seeing a smaller size of the photo in bottom right hand corner. Also, pegman looks like he’s out in the middle of the Pacific!

I saw the same in my first try to open your photo. The zooming on the small copy in the lower right corner was visible and moving. Reload brought the image up okay.

I guess this is just an internet issue. It’s a low way from Melbourne to Copenhagen

@AdamGT I think this could be because the image file was corrupt while uploading to the Google servers. If you right-click the image and ‘Save Image As’, it just downloads a black rectangle. I wonder if you were to delete just the image and re-upload the image this could fix the problem?

@AdamGT I’m getting the same issue when linking directly to the review. Black screen, pegman in the ocean. Like Morten suggested, I zoomed and got the thumbnail in the corner, but the image still doesn’t show up. A refresh brings the image up, though. The response from the owner was posted 4 months ago, but the review shows it was from 4 days ago. Did you update the review recently? Did you just add the photo 4 days ago to an older review?

What’s really odd is that it seems to completely crash maps, I cannot close the image or even click on the POI details. I’m still given the option to report a problem, and the image is clearly on the report page. I tried saving the image from the report page to see if it gave the same results as James, but it downloads a full image.

I thought, perhaps, the image image or the review were being hidden. But, going to the POI and scrolling through reviews shows yours. When I select the image from the review listing, it’s fine.

Lastly, for the sake of science, I thought maybe the link you created was corrupt for whatever reason. So, I made a new link while logged into Chrome/Goog and opened it in a private Firefox window - same results. I then created a link from a browser that is not logged in or connected to Google - same result.

Glitch in the matrix, man.

Hi @AdamGT ,

I’ve just checked and your review is no longer listed. Did you remove it?

More interestingly, are you driving around in a Maserati? :sunglasses:

Thanks for checking and for your suggestion @JamesHogg . Your test indicates a black rectangle publicly but privately, after adding a second photo both are there and as you can see from the screenshot below, both are gaining views. Weird!

Interesting how you’re getting to see the image on a refresh @JustJake . Yes I did edit the review early when trying to figure out what’s going on here. Yep it crashes Maps for me too. Not much is better than science Jake so good thinking with the other tests you carried out. Interesting but frustrating !!!

Thanks for jumping in @nigelfreeney . Nope I didn’t delete the review but it’s possible that the AI has hidden it.

I cannot confirm or deny whether I’m driving around in a Maser Nigel

Hi @AdamGT

It’s definitely fixed now.

I can view both pictures on Chrome browser and Android app. I also spotted one of these beautiful cars out in the wild last week, and had to get a pic. Guess now is as good a time to share
