How do I see why a valid location has been deleted?
How can I contest it and get returned?
some it is clear the owner wants to remove bad reviews and start again, but now seeing hiking spots with many good reviews being deleted.

For seriously important places it is possible to get Googlers to reinstate such places. Then it is helpful if you can provide the link to the place. You can find it in your email archive if you created the place, or if you made a successful edit to the place. For less important places we might be letf with creating a new pin.
There is no option to get information about who delete a place.
If you think your missing pin qualify for the special treatment, please add all the info you can and tag a Google Moderator.

I think people who are angry about this business have stopped. Due to which that business was removed, sometimes this can happen. But we can establish the business anew. We can get new reviews by setting up a new business when all previous reviews are removed.
