Local Places

With everything in lockdown, and everyone following the “2km from home” restriction on travel, it’s time to discover some local history at your doorstep.

For me that is King Mesgegra’s Mound, the burial mound of the King of Leinster who was slain by the Liffey in 26 AD.

The Mound is an Iron-Age construction, but it was used by the Normans in the 12th Century to create a Mott and Bailey to secure a crossing point at the Liffey, a ford or Átha in Irish, which was established in the late Neolithic - possibly as early as 6,000 BC.

The Mound also contains one of only 7 warm water wells in Ireland known as “Sunday’s Wells” - the folklore of Clane has it that the well has healing properties.
