What does the Local Guide program mean to you? Oops… that’s a tough one! ?
Maybe because the program means the world to me.
But if I had to narrow it down to just three things, this would probably be my answer:
My superpower
Since I have Google Maps (and the other Google apps) at my fingertips ?, I feel that nothing can stop me ?
I’m no longer afraid of traveling alone, or getting lost.
I don’t need to carry printed maps, or heavy guidebooks anymore…
I have freedom to improvise… and go off-script without taking unnecessary risks, and with the reassurance of having all the support and security that only GoogleMaps can provide.
And the best part is that my superpower gets bigger and bigger as I help others, because each contribution, review, and piece of information I supply, helps Google to know me better and to be capable of anticipating my needs.
My Lifesaver
We all need something to hold on to in times of crisis.
Well, I held on to the maps with all my strength
I know this may sound weird, but somehow the Local Guides program “saved my life”.
Let me explain this …
When I first started contributing to Google Maps, I was fighting breast cancer. At the time I had no idea what the points I was accumulating were for, but I had this crazy belief that if I succeeded in writing at least one review a day I would be safe.
This wonderful and productive hobby became my ritual of good luck and filled my hours in the waiting rooms. Along the way I not only managed to put my entire city on the map, but also became an expert in reviewing medical centers (Who would have thought it? )?
Anyway, thanks to this process, I came up with the great idea that keeps me excited these days: a series of “Pink Lists” from different cities to provide guidance to women who have just been diagnosed with breast cancer and don’t know where to go.
Including all kinds of useful information: From where to get free wigs, to the location of the closest mobile mammography machine, to Clinics where intravaginal ultrasounds and other sensitive exams are performed exclusively by female staff
Which leads me to the next point…
My way of giving back
I feel that Google Maps has not only helped me find my way around countless times, but has also kept me safe in unfamiliar cities and given me inspiration and a renewed desire to live and stay healthy.
That’s why I feel a great satisfaction each time I have the chance to give back at least a small portion of everything I’ve received ?
