Visiting Brussels March 2017. Seek local guide
Hello @bobw . Welcome to Local Guides and our Connect community forum. We are happy to have you here. Be sure to explore the many sections of the site and check out the conversations happening among our Local Guides.
As @ErmesT said, if you are looking to meet up with other Local Guides in Brussels I recommend checking out the “Let’s Meet-Up!” board as well as our calendar of meet-ups. I will move this thread over there for organizational purposes. Below I have included some useful tips for getting started here on the Connect community.
Tips for getting started:
This section of the site has some good tips on how to use the community and interact with your fellow Local Guides.
- Search the community before posting as others may have asked your question (and received an answer) already.
- Use a descriptive title for your post to make it easier for people to know whether they should open it.
- Use the Location field to geotag your post to a specific place, but make sure its important to the content of the post.
- Don’t share personal information on the forums, check out the private messaging option instead.
- This area has helpful information about the Local Guides program in case you have more questions.

Hi,
My name is Gene - WM 66 - Am arriving 21/4/2017 , Traveling solo. I am a history buff, and will be staying until 24/4/2017/
I am looking for some local, not tourist, Belgian food. I have looked up the major tourist sites, and there are some I would like to see, but would like an honest opinion of which of them are a waste of time, and which ones I won’t regret skipping.
Also, is a day trip to Bruges worthwhile and I will not have a vehicle, just trains or public transport
Thanks
Hello there,
For typical belgium food I would recommend Fin de siecle https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fin-de-Siecle/156879724358527, very good food at a good prize is a favourite around locals aswell. Of course you need also to try the Belgium trappist beer, you can get it anywhere but the most famous place among tourist is Delirium http://www.deliriumcafe.be/. It is in a small street, that doesn’t smell too good, but for some reason it is very famous. Also the belgium waffles are a classic (you can find them around the city), chocolate and frites, the most famous place for frites is Maison Antoine in Place Jourdan http://www.maisonantoine.be/, you can buy the fries and sit to eat them in one of the pubs surrounding Place Jourdan, it is not only allowed but expected.
For places to visit, you cannot miss the Grand Place, and the Royal Palace, for me Brussels is a city to walk around to get to know it, you can start in the Grand Place, move to Monts des Arts, the view from the top is quite nice, then go to Place Royale, then to the Royal Palace and the Royal Parc, you turn then to visit the Palace of Justice enjoy the view and then go to Sablon neighborhood. Of course at any point you can stop and enjoy a beer!!!
And almost forgot the Manneken Pis, for me it is a bit dissapointing but it is one of the symbols. The same with the Atomium is an impressive building but don’t expect anything mindblowing inside. It is anyway interesting to see.
I hope it helps,
Blanca
