I just want to confirm that there is not longer a way to delete the “Local Guide” tag from your Google reviewer profile, besides deleting your reviews. Is that correct?

Correct, since quite a while, you don’t need to agree to become a Local Guide and there is no other way to remove this attribute, besides deleting all contributions or the Google profile.
If I remember correctly, after the first contribution any user of Google Maps is labeled “Local Guide”.

Everyone with a Gmail account is now a Local Guide, as you can see in Local Guides points, levels & badging - Android - Google Maps Help
@WilfriedB , level 1 start at 0 points, as you can see.
There is some limitations: Businesses, organizations, and anyone under the legal age requirement cannot participate to the program.

Efectivamente, los niveles se alcanzan de formas variadas.
Y además vas ganando reconocimientos como experto.
Con tu participación ya sea, enviando fotografías solas, o con comentarios puedes obtener más puntos.
Has reseñas de los lugares que visitas cuando envíes cada fotografía.
Al publicar muchas fotografías vas ganando puntos para ser Experto en fotografías. También puedes publicar videos.
Al entrar en Google maps y entras a algún sitio que conozcas, puedes ayudar a muchas personas que tengas dudas y hagan preguntas, esto cuenta mucho también.
